It's a carb. You hold your thumb over when you hit it and release your thumb and inhale to get all of the smoke out of the spoon.

    its called a "carb"

you put your thumb on it while you inhale and take it away near the end of your inhale. it gets u higher but i cant remember the exact physics of it.

    this is how it works.
    1. Cover the carb
    2. light the (tobacco) lol.
    3. inhale with you finger covering the carb.
    4. the inhaling brings the outside air into the buds, and thus into the pipe through the small hole in the pipe.
    5. releasing the carb draws outside air into your lungs, but not throw the weed, thus "clearing the pipe"

Repeat many times for desired effect

Yeah and also, it allows you to get oxygen without having to stop inhaling, and then take your mouth off, and then inhale more.

What I don't get is the little hole in the bowl of the spoon. Doesnt weed fall through that hole? I'd be paranoid while smoking out of one, which is why I'm getting a chillum or bat soon. lol

Surprisingly, weed hardly ever falls through that hole. They do have glass screens for spoons if you're worried about that.

no its not, in face thats one of the prime modes of entry with some sort of picking device if you're going on a resin hunt....granted, the carb needs to be big enough for any stray weed or resin to get through it....

if the carb is too big (rarely) you'll tend to nearly burn your finger when you smoke, and you may notice resin starting to cling to the spot on your thumb/finger that covers the whole. if its too little (almost always) then it does a pretty shitty job of clearing the pipe unless theres absolutely no more combustion going on in the bowl anymore, in which case using a carb to clear the bowl becomes pointless. personally i'm more likely to just clear the bowl by letting whatever i can't get in my lungs sit in there till it clears out on its own. helps the pipe resinate better.

spoons...we usually call them bowls here, too, but "bowl" to me and my friends can also mean a sherlock, a sidecar, a hammer, a bubbler, or any type of pipe other than a bong, hookah, or vaporizer, so long as its being used for something except or in addition to tobacco. a spoon is simply a type of bowl.

and carbs are called carbs, or else a choke or thumbhole. to me and all the people i smoke with, a shotgun is a steamroller (type of pipe), where you take a hit and blow your remnants into someone elses respiratory system through a tongueless open mouth kiss of sorts, or else where you stick a burning blunt or less commonly a joint cherry-end into your mouth and blow through it, and someone cups their hands around the mouthpeice and gets a HUGE lung-raping hit. i've never heard of anyone calling a carb a shotgun, though the three other things i mentioned all get called shotguns from time to time.
