One of New Zealand’s largest cities lay in ruins Tuesday night after a powerful earthquake killed at least 65 people, toppled buildings and left scores trapped beneath chunks of concrete. “This is just heartbreaking,” New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said during a trip to survey the damage. “This may be New Zealand’s darkest day.” The 6.3-magnitude quake struck Christchurch during the lunchtime rush. Frantic rescuers scrambled to reach those trapped beneath the rubble hours after the earthquake struck. Dazed, bleeding residents wandered through streets strewn with debris and piles of concrete. A woman atop a pile of rubble tearfully pleaded the crowd to help her. See Live Video
That's messed up! And they were just getting over the last one too. I think there's a member here from Auckland. I wonder if he's alright.
I was there just a few years ago. Beautiful city, at least it was. I see Christchurch Cathedral has been damaged as well as much of the city. How sad... I once lived and worked there back in the 1980s. Here's some video of the devastation... It's a pity it happened in the middle of the day with everyone at work and on the streets. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRo-i04yAYM"]YouTube - Major Earthquake hit Christchurch, New Zealand

I'm from CHCH. I was at uni at the time, if I was at home I may have died. My apartment building collapsed. I saw people covered in blood, gashes, bruises. Saw a guy crushed in a car. My friend saw a building fall on someone. Some parts of the city you wouldnt even know there had been an earthquake, others its just rubble. Police & Military have now blocked off the central city.
Death toll is at 98 now, confirmed 3 mins ago. I'm in Tauranga new zealand. On the north island. Poor people down in Chch.
