For some reason I have an incredible ability to break strings. I haven't been even able to get through a single band practice for the last six months or so without breaking one nearly everytime. I can get in about two hours of playing before it's shot. I'm using 10 gauge strings on two guitars, and a set of 11's on another. I play with pretty heavy strokes, with a very precussive style...but this still doesn't seem to explain it all. Even frequent set-ups haven't done a thing. I can't really afford to go through 2-3 packs a week, and it's a fucking pain in the ass. Any ideas?

yeah, make sure that the strings are tight around the tuning pegs with no gaps at all.

I like getting my guitar tuned up, polished, and all shiny whenever I switch out the strings. So I usually take it to a shop in town for seasonal tuneups and string changes. I've taken all of my guitars (all three electrics) to three different shops, and strung them myself. I still break strings at the same rate. Even got filing and mods. down to the bridge to prevent the breaking, and it didn't work. I've tried 3 or 4 different brands of strings. Yeah, yeah. It's a bitch of a situation.

there can be alot of reasons that strings break. If they usually break in the same spot, it can help to figger out why. Also what kind of guitar are we talking about too.

If you have done your own filing on the nut or bridge, I would search there for a rough spot that may have slipped past you. It can be anything from a warped neck to a rough fret. Some guitars have that problem based on the angle the strings dive into the block.

Or tell the next guy to tech your axe that you are breaking too many strings, and he will search it out for you. If you are using tens and elevens you really shouldnt break that many just from strumming.

I bought a new guitar recently and the strings that came with it are probably the only strings I've broken in close to 10 years. This is most certainly due to the fact that they are light strings and of poor quality. I have always gone 12 - 56 (I play accoustic) and I have a strong feeling it's coz these are light. and poor quality.

Alright, maybe I'm not explaining myself clearly enough.

Like I said, I have three guitars. 1. G&L ASAT bluesboy 2. Fender Cyclone 3. G&L strat. They all break. IT's not an issue of me changing the strings, i rarely change my own strings. I have taken my guitar to three different guitar techs. After the problem persisted, one of them did minor mods. and filing on the bridge to help it out. It didn't. Other guitar techs tried sanding frets ect. It's not a warped neck because I get my guitars tuned up on a very regular basis. I have tried 3-4 different brands of strings. All of them break. Tough fucking situation.

in that case, i'm going to suspect that you just strum/pick too hard.

    that sucks.

Try Graphtech saddles and use some graphite on the nut... stock saddles work fine for me, but I have a problem with it too. I use .11s and .13s. I don't have the problem with my les... mostly just on fenderish guitars and acoustics.

i think youre holding the pic too tight. its very hard to change the way you hold a pic, but thats my guess. im thinkin youre getting into that rage on it mode, and youre clenching your fist to wail., but you need to keep your hand relazed and your grip loose, and a couple extra pics for when they fly out of youre hand.

at this point, I'd let the pro check out what you are doing and give suggestions. take the axes in to your fave tech and tell him/her what's up.
play for him/her as you normally play. I bet they will spot something, or at least have a suggestion.
be sure to tip on this one!

You're tuning too high of a Key for the guage of strings you're buying. Get a thicker or thinner guage. Take your box when you buy. Have a luthier look at it.
(On staff at some of the better music shops.)
    And good luck!

i thikn its more simple. if its happeneing on more than one axe, then its obviously something youre doing, or a witch put a hex on you. read up on some guitar forums and find out the proper way to hold a pick, then open up your mind, evaluate how you hold it, and go from there.
