Ok so it took a long time but I'm finally to the point of curing my plants. I was just wondering about the smell from the jars when I open them up during the day, it deosn't smell like weed, its more of a horrible acrid smell, after a few minutes when i go to put the lids back on the jars the smell is almost completely gone, but is back the next day. Is this normal when curing or is it something I should be worried about? To anybody that helped me out with the growing of my plants over the past few months I'd just like to say thanks a million, particularly rangerdanger. For anyone thats interested, at the time of harvest the two plants (the first I've ever grown) were 5ft 1" and 4ft 9" in height and both were about 3ft across. When harvested I had about a pint glass full of buds (not sure of the weight) and about 3 pint glasses full of leaves (a strange way of measuring, I know). I've decided to dry and cure they leaves aswell (seperate from the buds) because it seems a terrible waste to just throw them away. I'm possitive the next crop I grow will produce much more as I did make a few major mistakes when growing them. I didn't prune the plants at all at any stage which obviously effected the bushyness of them. Also I planted both the seeds in the same container (as I was only half expecteing them to sprout) and so had to keep them in the same container when transplanting as the roots were intertwined, I'm sure this had a major effect on how they grew aswell. And finally I didn't start using fertiliser untill about half way through the life of the plants, next time I'll start sooner. Apart from that I'm really happy with my first attempt at growing, it's alot easier than I thought it would have been. It will be ready for smoking in 1 week from friday, I can't wait. The only problem is I'm currently under a court order to provide urine samples once a week as part of my probation. Its a bit of a dilema, either I stick my weed into air tight containers and keep it in the freezer till after the new year (would it survive that long????) or I just smoke it and fail a few weeks of urinalysis (hopefully 30 weeks of clean samples will make up for it. Or I don't attend my drug tests for a few weeks and tell them I'm going on holiday or something like that, I dunno I'll have to think about it. If you are still reading at this point congratulations, you have some amount of patience or you are extremely bored. Tiocfaidh ar La, Stiney. Peace.
You could store some piss in the freezer whilst your clean then use it for your drug tests whilst smoking when you want. Well done with your first grow.
Take the buds out of the jar IMMEDIENTLY--they're getting ruined (mold). You put them in the jar too wet. Spread them out on a tabletop on top of paper towels overnight. Clean out the inside of the jar COMPLETELY. Let the buds dry out on the tabletop overnight or 8--10 hours, then restart the curing process. If you smell that odor again, repeat. The buds should be almost dry enough to smoke before you put them in the jar.
rangerdanger is correct once again. i saw the title of the thread and know at once it has to be mold. although i am positive rangerdanger knows what he is talking about it is the first time i have ever heard to put them back into the jar. i have been told by many many reliable sources that if mold is on one bud the spores are probably on all of them and it is best to just dry them out and leave it at that. mold is your worst enemy and can ruin your whole crop fast. right under your nose.
You're right Smokey, to a certain extent. If you take the buds out at the very first sign of an ammonia odor, and dry them out a bit, you can put them back in, but if that ever happens again then you want to take them out and leave them out. Mold thrives under moist conditions. Drying them out to regular smoking moisture before putting them back in usually stops mold dead.
And if it's too late for Ranger's advice honey oil it with ISO or if really carfull BHO, for recovery from moldy weed.
Ok thanks for the help, thats what I suspected. I took it out of the jars and dried for another couple of days and put it back into jars but the smell came back so I'm gonna forget about curing these and just leave them out to dry.
Here's a great tip... Don;t try curing your bud until the twigs and stems "snap"... that way you know they are dry enough. Mold is a killer... literally. It can make you very sick indeed. For those who think you can just wash the mold particles away in the hash making process... dream on. After sampling some hash made from moldy buds I nearly died. Nasty stuff. Clean stuff makes clean hash. Dirty stuff makes dirty hash. 'Nuff said? Peacefully, ~Reverend Chris Trip
Chris, maybe you got some stuff that wasn't cured properly. I haven't had that prob in my renderings, since I figured out how to evap the solvent. Ranger where you been?
I had a bud once, he was a good bud till he farted in my car and made him get out run along beside he got sweated and won't talk to me now!
