I find it's pretty easy to live apart from it.

We have been thinking about Greece or Spain. I've also thought of Japan, but I'm wondering if that would be too much of a culture shock, and I've heard if you don't speak Japanese, then living in Tokyo is the best option, but Tokyo is pretty expensive. I think Manchester or The Netherlands would be kind of cool. Is Amsterdam too touristy? I wouldn't want to reside somewhere like that, where it's a tourist haven.

I don't know if it'll interest you but a yoga lady I follow on Instagram (American) lives in Nice with her French husband. Mentions lots about living expat life over there.. "badyogiofficial".

Yes, it is. But although the Netherlands is small once you get out of Amsterdam or other tourist traps it gets better fast. It's still a great country to live in. The tourist traps and capital are easily avoided :)

That idea is not a thing anymore. It didn't work out in reality. Humans and all.
But if you have only a basic lock on your bicycle it will still be taken for a ride (esp in the cities) :D
High quality bicycle locks are a must there.

Ive been to Amsterdam in the 90s. Im honestly going to say .. I cant remember much hahaha. I remember the buildings mostly the architecture the dense togetherness but pretty and colorful. its much like some our city south side.

I'd find it interesting, yes. Maybe hearing from Americans who made the transition to living abroad, would definitely be helpful.

I follow a few people on youtube who vlog their trips, and The Netherlands looks really cool. Fun night life, but if you want to get away from that, there are serene countrysides. I wouldn't mind riding a bike everywhere

We have the city bike rentals too, where you just swipe a credit card and go. but its ridiculously expensive. Makes sense for people who are in town for a day or two but would be way too expensive for locals to use every day. You could just buy your own bike after 3 or 4 days of renting a city bike

When I was in New York everyone had electric bikes and now I want one

Renting is big here too. Regular or electric bicycles. Electric is more expensive naturally.

Amsterdam was a lot more fun in the 90s. It's now like Venice. Crowded and overvisited. Except Amsterdam gets also a lot of annoying party tourists.

We went because we wanted to go on the Dead Europe tour 10/90. But we decided we go Amsterdam instead. We figured the Dead would be in countries we go to jail for drugs and we just wanted to go to Europe on the dead leg and get wasted and come home. Like we would nationwide. This worked out because other deadheads were already thinking the stopover the Dam on the way to Germany comfort level eased with others of our kind.. Good times ..

Yeah, very annoying surrounding countries have harder drug policies. Even with weed we have to seriously watch ourselves when going to a neighbouring country like Germany or the UK. Ridicilous. I'm terribly spoiled with netherlandish drug policy. We should conquer the rest of Europe solely to expand this :-D

It's like that here with legal and illegal states. I have some friends who drove back from Denver loaded down with thc oil, gummies, etc and were pulled over in Kansas for speeding. The cop was being a dick but they lucked out and he didn't try to search them or anything

They were dumb to drive back with that much on them anyways though

Yeah, least you can do then is abide the traffic laws and try to keep under the radar. We had similar luck when going to foreign festivals though. We ALWAYS brought weed with us, most often to Germany. Always took some precautions but if searched would probably been caught :p Friends in other cars had less luck.

This is totally how we thought it back then. tho getting to Germany wasnt much harder than driving to a few states here away but how radically things could change. We didnt have tickets to see the Dead anyways not that it matters. Couldnt take anything with us after Amsterdam when to go home. so it worked out really nice for a couple days shrooming and the best weed in a legal place where nobody was going to bother you.
we checked out the sex area but just sort of got a laugh out of it. sometimes I think my city would be cooler has more tiny rivers and canals. but I like the rivers here..

a few years ago i had some weed in my bike luggage coming from France to UK by ferry.
a dog singled me out and the french police took me to be searched.. leaving my bike and bags outside.
    they searched me, my backpack...
all the while i noticed through the window that the dog had gone back to my bike, but the police guy didn't seem to make the connection
they were telling me over and over to admit anything i had, or i'd miss my ferry (like they would have let me board if i'd shown them the weed!)
but i kept denying anything. and they let me go. as if they couldn't even see the luggage strapped to my bike.
the woman even said "you're travelling light" while looking through my backpack.

this has little to do with what you're saying. but it pleased me to realise police could be so blind.
and it was a seriously good lesson.. would not attempt again.
