I'm really getting into Steve Earle. His bluegrass and grunge is really cool. I have his live album "Just an American Boy" (i think thats what its called) and it's really awesome. He's a hippie for sure, and I dig his politics...especially the anti-death penalty and anti-war stuff. Check him out if you're not familiar with his music...

Bluegrass and grunge? Mixed together? Sounds wild.

Steve Earle is one of todays songwriting greats. Lots of good albums. His "The Mountain" with the Del McCoury Band is great. "Train A Comin" is also excellent. Both albums/cd's are all acoustic.

Also I am always thrilled to hear Copperhead Road!

The time he played with the Del McCroury Band on Jools Holland (mid 90's) was awesome.

Would really like to find footage of that but I've never seen it anywhere. This clip here doesn't go anywhere near the energy with which they came across that time.

Just after them The Maverick's played and i remember Jools going up to the lead singer and saying "what do you think of that then?" and grinning. There was no answer to that, and no way The Maverick's could ever come close to playing anything as good as that.

he's one of the only "country-ish" artists whose music doesnt turn my stomach

I prefer his bluegrass stuff more than the mainstream radio play type stuff and yes that del mccoury concert was freaking great I remember watching that a few times on PBS

he played a nearby town this summer but I couldnt get a friend to come and the tickets were like $55 and I thought that was too much anyways...but would have paid for two if that friend would have been available

I saw Steve Earle on Monday, solo. I was impressed. I wasn't sure how it'd sound with just himself and a guitar/banjo but he pulled it off so well that I think it sounded better in acoustic. Plus he played all my favourites. Dixieland, The Mountain, Tom Ames Prayer, The Devils Right Hand, plus all the good ones from his new album. It was awesome. I think he came out kinda stoned, stumbling and mumbling and he basically admitted to smoking weed a few gigs before. He's a really good speaker too. I usually don't like artists that talk through their sets but I was happy as hell to hear what he had to say. =]

A truly great singer-songwriter-activist in the tradition of Woody Guthrie and Phil Ochs.
Two of my favorites are "Jerusalem" and "Christmas in Washington" which also have great covers by Joan Baez.
When she covers your songs, you know you have arrived.
