I just started watching the Shining because I'd never seen it before, but had always heard it was a good horror flick to watch. I'm going to read the book as well afterwards. Anyone else like this movie?
Yeah, I've probably seen the movie fifty times. It's great and it never gets old. Oh yeah, I'd definitely recommend the book... It's a bit different in spots and it's a FANTASTIC read. I read it in one short sitting. It was great.
I've only seen it one time, which was pretty recently. I loved it. I want to watch it again though because i looked away a lot.
I assume you're talking about the Kubrick film? The Kubrick film is incredible, but it really doesn't capture the essence of the book. The miniseries really captures the book well, but it's quite flawed in other ways. Neither is perfect, but I prefer the Kubrick film by far. Kubrick is my all time favorite filmmaker, not even close
^yea the miniseries was really good in my opinion, but this is coming from a person who can't stand stephen king so my opinion might be a little warped.
It couldn't be helped--most book-to-movie translations will always lose some elements in the process due to budget and time constraints. However, just the "Heeeere's Johnny!" is enough to make this movie awesome. And that it was directed by Kubrick. I really wish he kept the part where the boy reads the horny woman's thoughts, though.
My favorite part is when the hot chick gets out of the bath tub and you can see her tits and everything . . . well, at least until we get to see who "she" really is, LOL.
I was getting a boner while I read that part in the book, then BAM! I lost it to the decomposing old lady. I tried to remember that while watching the movie, and when that part came I kept chanting "Mustn't get boner, mustn't get boner" in my head, but I couldn't help it, and once again I lost it to the decomposing lady : (
LMAO yeah that part freaked me out .. the entire time I was like "HOLY SH** THIS CHICK IS HOT!" then it shows her in the mirror and it's an old decomposing lady and then he backs away and she's slowly walking towards him, laughing. Ugh. Had plenty of nightmares after that scene.
I personally recommend the Kubrick film over the miniseries. While the miniseries follows the book better, it lacks the atmosphere found in the Kubrick addition and the book. Plus, Jack Nicholson is always a delight to watch, being both funny and terrifying.
i have heard a lot about the book and the film both...so much so that i can't resist to put it in my shopping list for next month.
there was a maze in the one with jack nicholson. there was no maze in the book. i like the mini series better. also i like the stand better then the shining.
good book kubrick movie, hated it at first despite those goddamn scary twins, grown to like it a bit more despite hammy nicholson miniseries, hated it, his burgeoning 12-step dualism ruins it for me, plus that woman is worse even than olive oyl from the first one
Kubrick's film had gotten in my head at age 10 and never left. Multiple viewings revealed so many deeper levels of horror, that even Nicholson's portrayal seems to fade into the background of Stanley's direction, ambiguity, and hidden meanings. Glad to see others have analyzed many of these points and are easily found thru Google searches. One of the best films ever. Never saw the mini series. Don't think I'm missing too much, since I've read the book many times. Faithful adaptations aren't always better.
I wish I had one of those Snow-cats, like in the movie. But it never snows here so I'd have to use it in the dirt or something. One of my all time favorite movies! I want to read the book now (I didn't know there was one).
I have this on VHS and i love it!!!!! I dont really understand it totally though.... LIKE THAT PICTURE @ THE END OF THE MOVIE... Is that when those ppl were actually alive?? (1926 if i remember right) if so,thier spirits were hanging around A LONG TIME!!
I agree but Jack Nicholson’s decent into madness is brilliant https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6qDqdYY6-Y"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6qDqdYY6-Y H
This is the only movie I think is better than the book. Maybe its because I grew up watching the movie and only read the book last year, but I found the book bland. I've never liked King's writing style. I do wish the movie would have included the maze and the animal bushes. That part really scared me in the book.
