Yup. He also said that the internet is "a command centre for criminals and terrorists".

Yep, I heard that part, as well, theGhost.....

I have felt the impending threat of artificial intelligence for some time now.....
AI will not have scruples, feelings or human feelings of right and wrong...It will just be intelligence that won't give a shit.
I have already have seen and experienced what some unscrupulous people can do on the internet, with many user names and octopus arms to try to take over a forum, for instance, and the blocking of someone's honest attempts, etc......thievery, etc.........and that is still man over machine,,,unscrupulous ones....but still man.......Give the power away to the machine....man will no longer have any control over what it may do.

Without experiencing a problem the internet can create yourself, I really cannot explain it to you...same with most things, I guess....

I see it as possibly being the next step in human evolution, to merge our biological forms into a hybrid biological/silicon conscousness. It could certainly give one greater capabilities.

A computer can "read" hundreds of thousands of lines of code in less than a second, yet it takes humans maybe 10 minutes to read just a couple of pages.

I, of course see the benefits for such technology, but I also see what the downfalls can be if we render our power to a machine and lose control of it...... and let it control us.

I'm sure some sci-fi authors, such as Frank Herbert, were talking about this several decades ago.

Consider what calculators did to basic math skills.

calculators enabled mathematicians to focus their efforts on higher level more abstract mathematics, rather than spending all of their time working out the underlying arithmetic expressions.

What I mean is the effect they have had on the bulk of the population. I'm not speaking to the benefit of ultimate computing capability. I am saying that getting someone to count change back correctly these days seems to be a dying art. Few people seem to calculate tips in their head anymore. And it amazes me how percentages and fractions seem to SO confusing these days (particularly when discussing social issues).

I'm not necessarily lamenting technology, just that it doesn't always have a universally positive impact. Consider too what word processing did to typing skills. I remember when I used to have to type a whole page with no mistakes.

What Hawking suggests has made millions for Hollywood. But most of those movies overlook the obvious threat. Not the robots, but whomever is controlling them.

(BTW, quoting doesn't seem to work for me. No idea why)

If technology is so advanced that it can read people's eye movements, why can't security be advanced....finger printing all of your own accounts and emails away from hackers, for example......Your fingerprints only open each of your own accounts?

Well, mankind can be very unscrupulous, this I know....many times with first hand experience, unfortuneatley, which makes it hard for me to trust anyone or anything.....but there are still those with scruples...though few and far between....and a machine will not have any capacity to feel human emotion......so I do believe things can get worse and left in the wrong hands on top of it.

i do agree with you to some extent. human emotion, hm i think we are becoming less emotional and feel less at the hands of technology.
