Status Symbols

Which are any object that signify the owners high social or economic standing.

Are they a good or bad thing ?

 

Symbols are a very good thing for us. Our language is made of symbols. Our entire access to the world is processed through the use of symbols.

Nothing outside is a measure of who we are however.

 

I was referring to items that are nothing more than an extravagance, language is more of a basic necessity.

 

The usefulness of a symbol is the meaning attached to it. The meaning is always determined by the self. We can and do share our thoughts so we can come to some consensus of meaning.

I am called many and all things both bright and dull, but I am none in particular.

 

For the purposes of this conversation a status symbol is any extravagant object that signifies the owner's high social or economic standing.

There are no right or wrong answers to the question "are they a good or bad thing"....only opinions.

The problem isn't with certain people having status, but whether it is worth giving people status for economic reasons.

 

Neither. The obsession with status symbols is what adds the value of "bad" to them. Cultivating an epidemic of demand for something that is not an inherent necessity for survival is what's bad... as is allowing oneself to be seduced into defining self worth in terms of possessions. The real purpose is NOT to make life better for the masses, it's to coax them into sacrificing a measure of financial security on the premise that the purchase will have a lasting positive effect on who they are based on a notion that other people are judging them on the basis of a set of possessions.

 

I think for many people what they view as a status symbol in others is what they desire to have or possess and do not.

 

You are confusing conspicuous consumption with status symbols. While CC can be a status symbol, a status symbol isn't necessarily CC.

Status in the military can come from medals. In sports, it can come from skills. In clubs, from being able to dance. Family, knowledge, education, etc.

As far as I can tell on the hipforums status comes from being consistently proud of getting baked and posting about it.

 

I think they are for the most part a wank and I don't flaunt or covet them myself
