Hey all, I just started the dreading process, and I'm really excited! Sadly, my friend only did two last night before leaving town for a week, so I just have two random dreads on the back of my head, but they are only getting me more pumped up. I'll post some pics when I do more next week. I got some questions for the vets though: I really wanted to go au naturale, but my hair is really soft and straight. My friend used this balmy stuff that she claimed wasn't wax, but seemed pretty wax-like. Does that sound familiar? will it smell like wax will? How can I secure dreads with hair like mine (and as short as mine (3-4")) without wax? Also, what does maintainance entail exactly? Thanks for any and all advice!
srry just saw noone replied and this was already on page 2 so..umm ask your freind to not use anything at all i hasve no clue what the crap shes put in it is but you need nothing your hair will dread just finbe you can backcomb yourself if u want or u can skip that and just stick in a few beads to help hold sections togerther and let time do itds thing if i were u id get a bunch of beads..take a section of hair wet the tips so they come to a point and stick together lol bit ..take a loop of thread therough the bead hole stick the hair through the loop (close to the tip as u can pull it through the bead with the thread force the bead upwards till it sticks on its own..prefferably closer to the tip then root if it sklides up too far use a smaller beasd or bifgger section.. once the beads are all in and sticking just wash weekly or so, wear a tam alot and give it time in a few weeks u shpuld notice its starting to dread
There is a load of hair care "balms" over here (in the UK) targeted at the black haircare market made by a company called DAX that all claim to be water rinseable. They do however also sell a range of product specific shampoo's to remove these so they may not quite be as easily removed as they would like you to think. That said I have never tryed any of them so I cant really comment, I'm just suggesting this as a possible identity of your mates product of choice. As for your back-combing it took my sister (with occasional help) about 10-12 hours over 2 days to finish my hair, and after a few weeks it had all fallen out. There was one dread at the front that fell out really quick and I was mortified, so i kept playing with him trying to get him to look nice and now (6 weeks later) he is the most locked of my dreads.
to put beads in my hair i use a straightened out paper clip- i wrap a small amount of the hair end around it then slide the bead up the paper clip and bam it's on there
