I have wanted dreads since I was in highschool (10 years or so) but I never thought I had the commitment to a. keep my hair 1 color, or b. grow it out long enough to do anything with it. ~ 5 years ago I settled on a color (black) and 2-3 years ago I gave up on cutting my hair. 2 months ago I gave up on a brush, and conditioner and started washing with dr. bronners, took regular trips to the beach, and my hair BARELY got tangled. Just the ends in a couple locations, just enough to make me look kinda dirty haha. My hair is just SUPER straight, not even a hint of curl, VERY fine, and thoroughly damaged, but not enough to make it dread up!

So I am trying plan B, and backcombing my hair. I am about 3 hours into, and I have the front half of my head sectioned and backcombed. I am going to need to wait for my boyfriend to come home and help me section the back.

I am not going to use any wax. Currently I am backcombing, and then twisting them into little buns to keep them out of the way while I move to the next. Pix to come soon! I hope it doesnt look lame / totally fucked up / horrible, because I will probably have to cut off 3 years of hair and commitment if this doesnt work out. ahahha.

    You can surely dye dreads!

*And three years is just about when dreads start getting cool.

You won't have to cut. Plenty conditioner is all that's needed.

Well I am hoping that I wont ever have to take them out. And if I do, itll be a good reason to go short again (which I have missed haha) Yea, I plan on dying them, but not the funky colors that I used to on a weekly basis before.

This advice was MOST helpful out of everything I knew before starting my dreads. Had I not known that,
I would have been very disappointed.

yea, I am fully aware, that I will have frizzy-shit hair for the first year. Thus the need to practice "commitment" before I knew I was really ready, and could better control my impulsiveness .

I've got this ultra fine hair, to the point where people ask me on a fairly regular basis if I straighten it (which I don't.) I tried 2 years ago but my hair didn't lend itself well to the process and I abandoned it. And since I've moved I don't really know anyone in the area with expertise in dreadlock department so I've just kinda given it up. One of my fiends bought me one of those joke rasta hats with the attached dreads for consolation though lol.

I have BABY fine hair. It has taken hairdressers by surprise how thin it is- but it tangles SUPER easy and it is dreading up really quickly.

    Thank you!

I was considering getting a perm as well. My hair is so straight and fine, that I have used a comb or brush no more then once a month, and more as a novelty for most of my life. If I had hair long enough to pull back into a pony tail or longer, all it took was conditioner and running my fingers through it to get out any tangles. I am excited to see how this holds up.

    Thanks :)

Here is just the front done. I am waiting for help to start sectioning and dreading the back. I am happy so far. I havent been palm rolling at all yet, and might try to avoid that. this is just back combed and twisted.

Mine are squiggly like yours. I backcombed the front of mine by myself too, and was left without help for the back...so I let it go natural.
Your dreads will be awesome, they suit you!
