I always go smooth for the summer. I've tried the creams and yeah, the result is smooth as glass...be careful because it's caustic and burns and can eat away at your skin. For me it's very fine and grows at an angle and on the top I get ingrowns that take forever to get rid of. So, after much trial and error, I have found what works best is the Philips One body blade for the top - it leaves just a tiny bit above the skin line that prevents ingrowns. Still looks and feels pretty smooth. The rest is no problem with a basic blade, never had a problem....zip zip in the shower. I think another takeaway is it's never going to be really perfectly smooth....and don't do it every day.

I would get an ingrown from time to time, just in the front. It's fine and grows at an angle, so it's easy to get ingrown. The Philips One body blade cuts it just above the skin line, not below, so they don't have the chance to get ingrown. It's not baby smooth, but pretty close, plus it's fine and light so you really can't see it anyway. I'm not a really hairy person, so the look is good, not like a bald spot on a bear. It's some trial and error to find what finally works best for you with your type of skin and hair. When I tried the cream, yeah it was super smooth, but since it came out from below the skin line, I got a a bunch of ingrowns when the grew back out...plus, as you see, it can irritate your skin as it actually can dissolve some if you leave it on too long.

I use a rechargeable Phillips Multigroom with I think 14 attachments. I got it specifically for manscaping so the ‘bodyshaver’ is the only attachment I’ve used on it. As has been said, it gets very close, so it won’t leave you totally smooth, but also won’t leave you sore or with ingrowns. I probably did it with shaving gel & a cartridge razor in the past, but I wouldn’t take a safety razor or even cartridge razor anywhere near my manhood ever again, when the Multigroom is so good. Just move it gently over the area you want to trim, it’s so easy. In between when I was first looking for a better way than shaving gel & razor, I tried a battery operated Gillette Fusion trimmer, the blue one they sell in supermarkets. It was absolutely crap. Well to be fair it worked ok, but the battery just about managed one go, when I replaced it (with a brand new, good quality battery) it never worked again. I changed it, and the exact same thing happened again. I got a refund, and then got the Multigroom. I’d always recommend a rechargeable trimmer, that battery one was dreadful cheap garbage. It’s well worth paying £40 or whatever they are these days for a good rechargeable trimmer. I love being smooth and do it every 2-3 weeks. I don’t know why I put up with a hairy ballbag for so long. Remember it’s called a trimmer for a reason. It won’t shave you but will get very close to smooth without any discomfort, or any stubbly / itchy feeling. Also what it cuts just falls away (do it stood in bath / over toilet & just flush away) whereas you’d have to keep rinsing a cartridge razor to get the gunk out of it.
