Strange as it may sound, a simple thing can lead to birth defects. Many birth defects, like Downs Syndrome, come from the man's sperm. And simple things can lead to defective sperm. Simply aging. Or injury down there. Boy should start wearing protection as soon as they reach adolescence and start playing contact sports, like football. And men (and women) should receive genetic counseling, the older they get. We don't need to bring back eugenics or forced sterilization, of anyone really. But genetic counseling probably is indicated in many cases. Especially as the couple is getting older. Or if there is a birth defect that runs in either's family.

Plus, another thing to consider as you get older, though you'd never think of this. Even if you are an excellent parent, who will provide for your child if he has a birth defect or handicap? The older you get, the more like it is your child will have a special need. And if you are old, especially very old, you might not even be around when they move onto college, or even high school. Have a trust set up. And have other family members involved. And also have an informal agreement on how your family members will help your special needs child once your gone. Especially for unforeseen circumstances.

    No, no “informal” agreements.

if you are the parent of a special needs child, set up a trust.
    DO NOT leave them stranded.
