i'm sorry, this isn't necessarily a body mod. question, but i thought maybe i'd find help..

i'm looking to get my hair dreaded and was wondering if anyone can recommend a place within the nyc/northern nj area. as it is, my hair is shoulder length, straight, and thin.. idk if it'll work out. any comments are appreciated.

    thanks,
    m.

im not from there, but if i where you id do it myself, thats what i did.Took me 2 dyas of nonstop dreading. Or you can find 3 good friends and it will take around 3 hours. I wouldnt go to a shop to get it done because i find they try to make them look good right away instead of the long run.

go to the kotty know how forum in the personal forums section. and read all relevant information. dont go to a stylist, dreads arent like having a perm or a cut n blow dry.

i knew someone who wanted dreads so she went to the hairdresser to get her hair done in little braids, so that all the sections were even, and when the roots started to dread up, she took out the braids and she backcombed each section with a flea comb and palm rolled them all. Popular advice i've heard is NOT to use dread wax. Try not to wash your hair unless absolutely neccessary and if you do, use antibacterial soap. Don't use conditioner, as it totally goes against the whole dreading process. if you can't stand greasy hair, and have a habit of putting your hands in your hair, get some groovy scarves happenin' .

Dreads are beautiful, good luck with yours. I know that having thin hair can make it more difficult. But it takes lots of love and time and patience. Enjoy running a brush through your hair now, cause that is something you will probably miss.
    shalom~
