my calves are killin me! i went on a 7 mile hike and now i'm really sore. i was sore last week too from just doing a little bit of cleaning. (4 hours worth) what can i do to help not be sore in the future? i realize i need to exercise more.. which i plan to do. i even rode my bike yesterday even though i hurt. what can i do now that i am sore? i have been trying to move and stretch all morning.
The soreness is a combination of lactic acid buildup and your muscles recovering. When you put stress on muscles, they are worn down, and then they are rebuilt stronger. If you keep training, you won't be as sore after future workouts, but you'll still be sore, and this is a sign of having done a good workout. To reduce soreness, you can stretch, but do not to stretch when cold. If you get blood pumping through the muscle again, that could wash out some of the lactic acid. But the best is really to rest the muscle and give it time to recover.
Ahh! The after workout pain... Jimmy P hit a lot of important things like not working out cold, always warm up prior. But after you work out, rememeber to cool down with some streching. I am also a fan of epsom salt soaks. I used to run 10+ miles a day for years and when I got sore, a warm bath ALWAYS felt good. There's also lots of good products from Bath and Body Works--- lotions, bath salts, massage oils. And GNC and other places of the sort and many health food stores sell a soap for muscle relaxtion. I'll have to look up the name. I'll post it up soon. Be well, DD
I use this soap, and it works good for me to get the shiz off http://shopping.yahoo.com/s:Bath & Body:4168-Brand=Kiss My Face:b=16
