There's a lot of discussion about what to wash dreads with - while washing my own today, I thought about a couple of things & want to share them.

First, I have noticed over the years that the different Dr. Bronner's liquid soaps have different effects, on my hair, anyway; probably do on others' hair, too.
Tea Tree Dr. B's, for example, seems to leave the most residue. Peppermint is the most drying (seemed great for starting my dreads), and Rose seems to work best as a shampoo (for me; my hair tends to be dry, no scalp issues like dandruff, etc.). I am wanting to try Dr. B's Citrus. Lavender has always been a good one for shampoo; I have not yet tried Almond or unscented (Baby Dr. B's), so if anyone has, share away. Ah - Eucalyptus always seemed pretty pleasant for a shampoo... a bit more residue than Rose or Lavender, though.

Just some experience, my own of course, to put out there.

Also, I found a recipe I plan on trying; perhaps others might want to, too:

Hair rinses are meant to soften and nourish your hair and return it to its naturally acidic pH. Organic apple cider vinegar is a good rinse for the hair and scalp; it not only returns them to their naturally acidic pH, it is an alpha hydroxy acid and removes dead skin cells from the scalp and residue from the hair.

Try making your own apple cider infusions by soaking lavender or rose petals in the vinegar for a few months, straining and using the resulting vinegar as a hair rinse. Make the concoction in a glass jar, such as a canning jar, and fill with the plant matter and then cover it all with vinegar screw the lid on tightly and set for at least six weeks.

Ive only tried mint and almond Dr B's. Both left my hair residue-feeling...
I gotta say though, I LOVE the way almond smells. Mmmmm.

Yeah, the residue is why I rinse with acv (in plenty of water). So far, I haven't found any soap that doesn't leave that....slightly sticky feeling. I like that acv recipe, though - curious to give it a try.

Pat, I find when I don't wash for more than 4 or 5 days, the itching drives me bonkers. Do you ever have that happen?

I never stick to a routine I just wash either every 2 weeks to every 2 months ha I dont really care but usually during the hot months which is like 9 months out of the year its like once a month but during winter I usually dont wash my hair because sun isnt out enough to dry it properly and it stays moist all day but I usually dont get a problem from itching not that bad anyways just a few itches every now and then

so do you have to wear a shower cap every time you shower Pat? I don't think it's coo not to wash. Your scalp is like your face and there is shit everywhere. I know when I go into the city/go out to dah club I have to wash my hair the next day. It would be way more effort for me not to wash then it is to wash.

If I washed my hair that frequently I would spend all my life with wet hair. It takes over a day to dry, and much longer if I have it tied up, plus the time taken to wash and towel dry etc. Just not practical really :p

ive gone months and months without washing my dreads before and even now I only wash once a month/couple of months if I can be bothered.
i just leave um but Im generally quite lazy anyways,if i rolled in shit or something then i would obviously wash them.
I also just use ordinary shampoo most of the time (timotei) and always have.
So yeah anyway thats what I do :)

nope. never had an itchy head once

No there's none that fit. So I just make a turban out of my hair and I am taller than my shower head so they avoid getting hit with water.

And like I said before (though only a select few believe me) my hair doesnt absorb water so it feels stupid to wash. I only rinse after I did something that would have made build up a good sweat and then I just rinse off my scalp

I would feel that one of the greatest luxuries in my life had been stolen if I didn't sit with my head under hot water in the shower.

I'm using just baking soda as my wash and just did ACV yesterday after a month of not. My dreads feel nice and soft today. :) I wash... about every 5 days now.

I wash on no set schedule, just when it feels as though it needs a good rinsing. I use a Dr. B's bar, but I can't remember which one. I only use the soap every so often, mostly I just rinse with water, and my scalp has never been healthier.

I use just water, and mostly saltwater from the ocean. I consider my daily/bi-daily beach swim a wash. If I don't do that, I just rinse with plain water in the shower and have started to spray a mix of saltwater, lemon juice and patchouli to leave in - this is working awesomely on the progress, in the sun, by the way.
