Some hippies ruin it for everyone (and Marley fans)...

Or at least that's what I thought for years. Let me introduce myself before I get in too deep...I hope you like reading.

I'm 19 years old and I live in West Virginia and I've labeled myself a hippie for as long as I knew what one was. My religious beliefs are somewhat Christian and very New Age, but what I believe most is loving your fellow man and treating him the way you would want to be treated. I live by love, and believe that it is the meaning of life. Darkness comes from hate, fear, and ignorance while all the good things in life come from love.

I also believe in complete personal freedom. Our actions are between us and our higher powers if we happen to believe in them...no one else. Harming another person is the only exception...our safety should be protected. But the government should have no say in what we do at all. All drugs should be legal and marriage should be for everyone who wants it. Everything should be free and out in the open, and not the half-assed way it is now.

I guess I fit into some hippie stereotypes too. I haven't cut my hair in about 3 years. I bathe only often until to smell okay, not so much I strip my entire body of it's natural protective oils. I smoke weed occasionally. I love Phish, Sublime, 311, and Marley. I don't have a job. I'm a college drop-out. I'm an Obama fan and I really couldn't tell you why...

In high school I didn't fit in mostly because the hippies in my school were assholes. Utter assholes. I'm not sure of a better word to describe them. At least that's how I felt back then. They used the label "hippie" to hide behind, and excuse their behavior. I remember going to where they all hung out together and seeing needles laying all over the floor. They too would be on the floor out of their mind, while their skinny toddlers sat on the floor crying trying to wake them up. It was seriously the saddest thing I've ever seen. They had no political or world views, or even feelings of love. They just thought being a hippie meant getting as fucked up on chemicals as physically possible.

Oh and the thing that bothered me the most was that they just loooooved Bob Marley. They had pictures and posters of him up everywhere, and some even had tattoos of him on their arms. I remember talking to them and asking them to name 3 Bob Marleys songs that don't include "One Love". Only a couple of them could. I asked them questions about Bob Marley's life and none of them could answer me. I wondered what in the hell made them such fans of a man they knew nothing about and they told me "he loves weed like us!" That always made me mad...I love Marley for his lyrics and what he represented. And they loved him because he smoked weed. They cheapened everything that man stood for by making his biggest accomplishment in life smoking a plant. Well, enough of that.

For a while these type of hippies were all I saw and felt like the outcast. I also felt guilty, and honestly a little envious. Maybe my high moral ideas were a curse and something that would just cause me to never be satisfied with life as it is.

But I've been through so much over the years and it's only made my identity as a "hippie" stronger. I love coming here and seeing how many intelligent people agree the things I do. I love knowing that some people would accept me for who I am even though I'll never be a fan of acid and sometimes I feel pity...not anger...for G.W. Bush.

So I love you all, world. I love the hippies I could never get along with and I hope they find their way. I hope the rest of you do too. I especially hope I do because I find myself lost day after day. But that's the time I just chill and thank God love is free. We're all equal, and all on the same path, and we all need to help eachother grow.

    :)
