As most of you undoubtly know, on the 30th of april the queen of the Netherlands will resign. Her oldest son will then become our next king. And this is the amazing song that some Dutch artists made for the king, as a gift from the Dutch people to the new king.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_lRn6oBwWY"]Het Koningslied - John Ewbank (officiële uitgave) - YouTube

It got mocked so much and it got so many bad comments from press, celebs and basically just everyone else that the main producer decided to pull the song back.

So what do you think of it?

I can't understand it, wish I could, but it sounds pretty good. Like a blend of old and new.

I suppose it's mostly made fun of because of the terribly bad lyrics, but quite some people over here agreed that it is generally a song unworthy for a king.

    Are kings worthy of anything?

Not really, there are more and more republicans over here (not in the US political sense though, but in the sense that we should become a republic instead of a kingdom).

It always astounds me that there's still royalty in the world. I vote for it becoming a republic too. So what is Dutch royalty like? I can't say I know anything about them, at least they seem to not love as much attention as their English and Monegasques counterparts.

They aren't as outgoing and excentric as their British counterparts and I don't follow them that close, but mostly the queen is an ambassador of the Netherlands with many political and business contacts.

In a way it doesn't matter much if there is a king (the title means both king and queen, depending who sits on the throne) or a president, since costwise it would probably be around the same. It's just that monarchy is a bit outdated and the king doesn't hold any real power. We have a minister-president and he is the real head of the government, although the king is seen as the official, but powerless, head.

I figured that's how it was. It's not only outdated, but also kind of ugly to care about some people's ancestry line and that they should be considered "important".

Yeah that's the main argument against it.

I'm pretty sure that nobody outside your country has ANY idea what your royalty does. Or, for that matter, gives half a fuck.

For some reason the whole world cares what the british soap opera does, but not yours.

    here you are,

You saw this moment so many times in your dreams

    There it is then

The day you knew that was coming is finally here

    Are you ready?

    Can you ever really be?

    There you are

Every man has a task in this life

    Everything done to prepare for

    And there it is

You promise that you will give everything

Every step you took led to here

    And look around you

    We walk with you

Through the rain and the wind

    I will stand beside you

I'll protect you against anything that comes

I will watch as you sleep

I am saving you from the storm

I'll keep you safe as long as I live

    A battle, two lives

We face each other, not to break

    A flag, two lions

Together in the sun and the rain.

    Side by side, chest out

Proud as a peacock, this is our sound

    And how small we are

    Our achievements are

    Go not avoid

    For you my child

    For m `n pa

    For m `n ma

Walk for you through the wind and rain

    And will stand behind you

I carry a banner with your name

Believe in you as long as we exist

I'm building a dike with my bare hands

And keep the water away from you

Let me know what you dream

    Where your heart longs

I will not rest until it has become true

And if you ever lose your way

I'll be your beacon in the night

I refer you to the harbor in the darkness

I will fight like a lion

    To you for nothing lacking

    I'll keep you safe

    As long as I live

    The W of William

Three fingers in the air, come on

    The W of William

Three fingers in the air, come on, come on

The W of William, the W We

    Very orange buffs head to

W of the water where we did not deviate

We make it dry, and build dikes.

The W welcome in our midst

To which god you may pray

    The W of William

    The W of William

The W of waking, eating stew

Millions of coaches who know better

The W always want to win

Whatever it is that we begin to

    Hello,

well, I think quite a few people here in Germany follow what our neighbours do. Prins Claus had many fans here and besides cheese, tulips and Rudi Carrell it's one of the things most people know about The Netherlands ;).

In 1945, the Dutch royal family sent 100,000 tulip bulbs to Ottawa in gratitude for Canadians having sheltered Princess Juliana and her daughters for the preceding three years during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, in the Second World War.
The most noteworthy event during their time in Canada was the birth in 1943 of Princess Margriet to Princess Juliana at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. The maternity ward was declared to be officially a temporary part of international territory, so that she would be born in no country and would inherit only her Dutch citizenship from her mother. In 1946, Juliana sent another 20,500 bulbs requesting that a display be created for the hospital, and promised to send 10,000 more bulbs each year.

Yes, I remember hearing/reading about that while living in Ottawa. I like tulips.

Nobody deserves this song. I seriously can't believe the makers thought it was something good. I guess they expected the dutch people to want something epicly cliché. I'm glad people see how ridicilously lame this song is.
