It's about 46 degrees outside today, very windy & still raining. But it's world war 3 inside trying to get my 5 year old grand-daughter to put socks on for school.
Of course I'm being a slight hypercrit cuz I'm barefoot as usual. But at 41 I can get away with it and if I walked into school then nobody would say anything to me about it, but if you send a kid to school without socks then a teacher would call you up and say stuff about the kid being neglected....(been there, done that).

Do any of you wear socks when you go anywhere if tho you don't want to?

The only time I wear socks is when I Goth out, and weat my big ass munster boots. That isn't too often though.

    Socks are evil.

I'm wearing socks now. But it's all cold and icky. So my barefooting is pretty much over.

I whipped off the socks and shoes when we ran the mile today in gym, though. That was nice.

Life is an unending seriers of compromises. Socks happen to be one of those compromises. I have to wear shoes to work so socks are often part my attire.

I, too, have to wear shoes and socks at my workplace. Quite often, the minute I hit my car, the shoes and socks are gone. Like Tool said, it is getting colder, but I still barefoot indoors all the time. I guess it depends on the weather for me...if it's warm enough, I don't wear socks at all...I either wear sneakers, flip flops or go barefoot.

If I absolutely have to wear shoes, I would never wear them without socks. Why would anybody want to put their bare feet into dark, sweat soaked, fungus filled, stinky shoes? It's bad enough having to wear the shoes, but at least with clean socks you can have some kind of insulation from all that filth that's growing inside shoes. Socks get washed. Shoes don't. And nothing will make your feet stink more than a few hours in hot, closed shoes without socks.

Having said that though, if you're not wearing shoes, there's no reason to wear just socks. Socks in a way are just soft shoes. Wearing socks without shoes not only ruins the socks (they get filthy and stained), it's just like wearing shoes because your feet are trapped in an enclosed hot covering, just like shoes. You could contract athlete's foot and other foot infections by wearing just socks, like wearing shoes, because it creates the same dark, damp, hot area that's perfect for the fungus to grow.

So, to keep your feet healthy and comfortable, wear socks when you must wear shoes. Otherwise, never wear socks.

Generally if I am wearing shoes, most of the time I'll wear socks as well, they absorb the sweat and keep the smell co-efficient down a bit.

Then where do you go barefoot in the summer? In your house?

I know what black feet are, that's what happens to your feet when you've been barefoot out in the streets and places like that a long time - easily washed off when you take a shower or something. The black on the soles of your feet is the same thing that gets on the bottoms of your shoes, you just don't notice it there so much and your shoes never get washed.

As to your feet getting "hideous" or "raw," how does that happen? I've never seen any "hideous" or "raw" feet.

Well, if dirty feet aren't your thing, I have noticed that stepping around a little bit on wet grass will generally clean your feet very well. It also keeps them smooth. Then after a bath or a shower, put on some foot lotion, and Ka-Blamm, your feets are all nice and purdy.

I don't care how cold it gets, I am going to barefoot all year round from now on.
I wear flip flops at work, so that's as close as I am going to get.

Other than that, No shoes for me.

Sounds pretty neat taking gym class in your barefeet!

As for socks, first of all I simply don't like wearing them as they feel a little too constricting at times. Secondly, it's always been a pain when it comes down to doing laundry, there's always one sock that seems to get lost along the way. I've solved the problem by having all of my socks the same color and that is navy blue, a perfect match for blue jeans, which is pretty much what I wear each day.

Flip flops and other slip on sandals are great, no socks needed, just slip them on and you're all set to go.

Can't she wear sandals without socks? I'd stand up to the teacher and say it's much healthier than wearing closed shoes, and if they gave me crap about it, I'd find another school! But then, I'm a *very* rabid barefooter who won't compromise for anything...

I'm always hitting the grass, moss, pine needles, clear puddles, as I am on record as wanting to stay clean down there. I work outside for a living, and I work for myself, so the only thing imposing sandals, shoes, or socks on me is my climate.

I'm in Maine, and I hate socks and all other forms of foot covering. But when the real cold starts (and it does get seriously cold here) I'll ramp up thru the levels of warmth as needed. And then ramp back down as fast as I want in spring.

Socks for me are used for inner lining in the real cold, and it does help with the odor thing---although I used to wear mocs w/o sox---but nowadays if it's nice enough to do mocs w/o sox, it's also nice enuf to do sandals or flops. Which may even mean it's nice enuf to be bare. I have to gauge that every day during the transition seasons here, depending on how much snow is on ground, how cold, ground frozen or not, etc.

It's a tough place to live and work outside, and I do it all in shorts, although there are days when it's best to keep my outdoor time short. Winter's the time to plan, and write, and get outside as best as can.

Solution: have the kid wear flip flops or talk to the school about letting your kid go barefoot. Either way then you dont have to worry about the socks. No need to make the poor kid wear socks if they dont want to. Besides id remind the picky teachers at school that the parent's taxes go into paying their salaries so they should be a bit more understanding of how you feel. If that doesnt work theres always private school or home schooling. No need to deal with the bureocracy at a public school if you dont have to. They just a bunch of greedy snobs who only care about money anyways.

Thats what id say too, if the teachers at one school are not willing to indulge your request then you can just take your business elsewhere. These teachers are always whining about kids being healthy but yet they wont let them go barefoot, thats being healthy! Makes me wonder what these teachers are smokin.

When I wear shoes, I usually wear loafers or sandals but always without socks. It gets a little chilly on cold winter days or in deep snow, but it has been my style, even when wearing a suit and tie.
