Has anyone of you tried soapmaking? It's so much fun, and except the safety handling of the NaOH not more difficult then baking a cake! This is my first one, a real natural and simple one, just plant fats and oils, no coloring, no scent, except a real natural one from the oils I used (walnut and olive are the smelly ones, YUMMIE!) This is my second one, dyed with white dye, and scented with coconut.
We made soap in my junior chemistry class. I can't remember what we used or anything...and as far as scents go, we didn't have any oils and all we had was cheap body spray, so it didn't smell very good. Not to mention, my partners had the brilliant idea of using model car paint as the dye...needless to say I have not used that soap, lol.
i'm due to make another batch of soap pdq. i make my own so that it wont have anything artificial in it. yes i am the queen of natural (well, except for the lye, of course. )
I'd like to get into soap making. I used to make all-natural dry shampoo for dreads for all my knotty friends. But, I never managed to make any soaps. I buy a really nice all-natural Blackberry and Sage soap from a groovy lady at my local Farmer's Market. The whole bathroom smells so good after anyone uses it!
If I can ever find a place that sells good soap-making supplies, I will make my own soap! I love home-made soap. I want to smell like vanilla all the time!
hey, i can give you the names of some suppliers if you like, just let me know how much of what type of ingredients you are looking for.
That's so awesome! Do have a particular website or book you used that you'd recommend for making the soaps? I'd really be interested in making some!
Best cold process soapmaking walkthru on the net: http://www.soapcrafters.com/recipes_fromscratch.htm anyone who wants to make soap needs to read thru the millersoap site: http://www.millersoap.com/ it covers a lot of the basics (especially re safety precautions) and will give info on where to buy supplies, etc. must have the lye calculator: http://www.soapcrafters.com/rwriter.php and a couple of other links in my collection: http://www.greensense.com/soap_q_a.htm http://www.soapnaturally.org/recindex.html#soaphttp://www.soapnaturally.org/recindex.html#soap http://www.pvsoap.com/recipes.htm http://www.soapnaturally.org/catr.html good luck!
I have been making soap for about 4 years now. I used to make it by recipes in book. Now I do the math based on my mold sizes. I think some of the best molds come from www.thesoapgoat.com. They have a bunch of syntheitc fragrances but I have never used them. I use pure essential oils from primafleur in my soap and they are the BEST out there. I get good deals on raw she butter and cocoa butter from conisa llc.
If you want to get even more hardcore this is a great instructional site for making lye. I started this a couple of years ago rather than buying technical grade lye. Hard work at first but worth it if you soap alot! http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_ashlye.html http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/paul_norman_3/soapmake.htm
i've heard that it's getting harder to find pure lye in some places. it's being pulled from the shelves anyways, i'll be saving the lye making info to my harddrive. good thing to know. cheers!
Unfortunatley, it's an ingrediant in making meth. Thank speedfreaks for ruining it for the soapers. Imagine snorting that crap!
Ick, tell me about it, warpedsoaper. I live in a town where meth labs get busted almost weekly. I guess when you live in a town with a population of like 2,000, people really don't have anything better to do than put their lives and those around them at risk. One of the bastards out in the outskirts of town ended up catching a neighborhood on fire because of his stupid lab and he got away scott-free because they "didn't have enough proof." Ack! Those stupid speedheads are ruining the world for everyone. I've seen what it does to people when they're tweaking and then when they come down and I don't see how it's worth it at all. Bah. Sorry, lol, didn't mean to turn this into a rant about meth.
