So...somebody should tell me the answer to this insanely stupid math problem.

An invenstment grows by 30% over a 5 year period. What is its effective annual percent growth rate?


Who the fuck cares, you might ask. Well, I tell you no one really. I am just really pissed off by the fact that I have a test tomorrow, and I have no idea what the fuck is going on.

What the hell is an effective annual percent growth rate? What's going on? Why must I fall asleep at the mere mention of numbers and effective annual rates and such?


Gahaahahhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaah. I don't get it.

 

do you have your textbook? you should look it up, i'm pretty sure there's a formula

 

i think its set up as

30% over 100%
and
x over 5years

you multiply 30% by 5 and divide by 100%

i'm ALMOST POSITIVE thats how you do it.

Ehhh...that's not it, apparently. I have the answer in the back of the book (it's 5.387%), but I have to show work...or something.

30% divided by 5?
What's the subject? That might help in the format of the problem....

 

To get how much it increases each year by %, you take how much it increased by which is 30%. When something increases like that its the same as multiplying by 1.3 (130% of something is a 30% increase). You need how much per year, which isnt done by dividing by 5 because your increasing the previous year's total by 30%. So you do 1.3 ^ (1/5) or 1.3 ^ .2 whichever you perfer. The ^ are the same as exponents, so for example x^2 would be x squared. So by 1.3^.2 = 1.05387. Since it has a 1 it is the same as multiplying by 105.387% since %'s move the decimal 2 places(dont multiply by 105.387 because its 105.387%<<<<) Subtract 100 and you have 5.387%.

I can't talk about math because I'm studying accounting right now..but man, it is so frustrating sometimes. And most college math is totally useless unless you are entering a specific field.
