In all the debate about God, Intelligent Design, Evolution, ect. there has always been an underlying view on the 'religious' side that says, " It must be god because we are what we are." The people in favor of Intelligent design, god, etc, state that the chances are too infentesmally small of life starting on this planet for it to be from pure chance. They say that the fact that we are here is evidence for the existence of a higher power. I say, "why?" If all this didn't happen, you wouldn't even be having the debate. The problem is two-fold: One: we view past occurrances as just those, in the past; immutable, unchangeable. We look into the past, and then at the present and say "How could it have happened any other way?" We see the past as obvious, crystal-clear. We look at the past and decide that since existence took that direction, is surely must have been the best direction, otherwise it wouldn't have happened.
Two: Humans are a very egocentric and haughty species. We look at ourselves as the pinnicle of the evolutionary chain. We are, of course, the paradigm of biological life, as is there was any doubt. We flaunt our characteristics, our creativity, or emotion, our religiousity and say that because of these, we are the best, the brightest. But when shown that we are but a peice of the puzzle, that we are only organism like the rest of them, we broaden our defenition. We say that of course life is created by God, life is too grandeurous to be expelled from the galactic protoplasm like a hocked loogie! We are special, we are privlaged, we are the chosen molecules! God created life because without God there'd be no life. Without God, there'd be no living thing to appriciate the beauty of life, and we just can't have that, can we?
In short, this is an issue of subjectivity. Who determines that life is pressious and beautiful and worth maintaining? Us, because we are living organisms. We cannot possibly imagine a universe without us, because there never has been. And in the end, the point is moot. We're here whether we like it or not. Don't take me for anti-life-in-general, I'm not. I love all the existence around me, i just don't appriciate other people trying to deify existence and making it less pleasureable for me to take part in it.

Sort of tying in with your explanation...
I'd like to say it irritates me to all hell when someone says "God created man, and all things were created by God for man"

To me, just as you said, it's completely egocentric. Who wouldn't want to believe that everything revolves around us.... but is it completely RIGHT to believe in so? I don't really think so.

I firmly believe that the very fall of humanity is due to that same egocentric attitude. Too many people take life for granted, including the creatures and other life forms that surround us... therefore destroying it all, and ultimately destroying our own human race.

It always comes down to self... Take for example, a country, will band together to ignite a war with another country, due to their own pitiful selfishness and idea that somehow their country, is the only country, the only important one that shall conquer... Divide the country into states or provinces: we see rivalry everyday without realizing it. Take for example, in football... One Dallas fan, may hate the state of Illinois, because the Bears are his rival.. Divide the states or provinces up into towns and you get the same thing... eventually you divide it up so far that it only comes down to yourself, and your own egocentric attitude and longing to survive and happily..

Not everyone is like this, but most are. And, those who aren't have learned not to be this way. It's a natural instinct to put yourself before anything; but I believe that being human, and having the capability to reason, and create theories, beliefs, and opinions...also comes along with the responsibility to use it wisely. And by that I mean that, just because it may be natural to be on the look out for yourself over anything else in the world, it's not ALWAYS the right way to go..

If that makes any sense at all.

I think the *existence of God* was solely created by the egocentric attitude that humans have. It's the need to feel the center of all things.

But that's just an opinion of my own.
