I go into work today and find out that they are firing me because of somthing not-so-bad that I did. I know of a few people who work at the same establishment and have done things twice as bad as what I did and still have thier jobs. I honestly think I was one of the hardest workers there! I learned so much new shit in the past 2 months ... I always do what i'm asked ... and if i'm not asked to do it, I still do! It's whatever though ... I didn't fight it. And I should have ... but I thought if they wanna be dicks about it, than i'll just ride the train. As soon as my supervisor said, "we'll have to let you go" ... I shook her hand and said it was great. I turned to my other supervisor, who I actually really liked, and told him thank you, it was good. Then I just got up and left. It was a great place to work, really. It was the largest pet store on the east coast. No lie. All I did was talk to people about their fish tanks, and play with animals all day. I'm gonna miss it ... I would have fought it if the place wasn't so corrupt, but like I said ... I know people who did worse than me and still have their jobs, only because of who they know. Whatever. This all means I have a legit reason to get completely intoxicated today. Holla!
whatd you do? that sucks though, working in a pet store always seemed liek an awesome idea. is there a competitor you could go work for, now that you have some experience in the field?
Things 'might' be looking up though ... Some of my friends there are gonna talk to the management and see see what the deal is. Cause like I said, other people have done the same or worse than me, and still have a job. I really loved the place.
A basic truth about the workplace- everyone is expendable. Also, hard work guarantees you nothing. Most places I've worked place a higher premium on ass-kissing than they do productivity- despite what they say. Hard workers get saddled with more responsibility without extra pay. Management find that to be easier than confronting bad workers (majority). Have a drink and a smoke for me!
I had ONE no-call-no-show ... Like I said, other people have 2 or 3 ... I get fired for 1? There are quite a few other pet stores I could apply at ... But this one is AMAZING. Seriously. Biggest on the east coast ...
It was a great place to work, really. It was the largest pet store on the east coast. No lie. All I did was talk to people about their fish tanks, and play with animals all day. I'm gonna miss it ... And yet they fired you weird!
No show & no call... That's tough to deal with from an operating standpoint but by tolerating it from others they bring on their own problems. Sounds like a place steeped in bullshit politics and favoritism. Maybe they did you a favor by letting you go? Consistency in rule enforcement is important.
^very very true doesnt sound like a very respectably operated store. though no calln no shows are definitely grounds for termination in almost every case, stinkfoot makes a good point in that toleration of several instances by other employees sort of sets a precedent. i'm not sure i'd want to work someplace were animals are treated as backstock, though. a friend used to work at a wellknown petstore in the area, and she loved getting to play with the animals, but they were inventory and were treated as such. sometimes shit happened to them "oh well, we'll just get some new ones" lots of animals die in pet stores.
It's not like that though ... This is a very reputable and decent pet store. It's not a chain, like pteco. All the animals we have get the best treatment. Cages/vivariums get cleaned out every singe day, as well as aquariums. The actual store is decent, but the people upstairs sucks dead monkey cock.
pet stores always have weird rules. I couldn't buy a one dollar frog because I had no parental figure with me. In which I had to go next door to radioshack and get another chill over 18 person buy a frog for me. Supposidly some kids were buying frogs and blowing them up so they banned all teens because of a few sadistic idiots
So, Im disposable... Unfortunately man, we all are. Sorry you had to realise it like this. Businesses survive before we are employed there and invariably, after we leave too. I'm not sure that going back there again, even if your friends manage to get you re-instated, would be such a good idea. Your card there would be marked for sure. Some prick would just be waiting for half an excuse to prove his original decision as being the right one. Chin up. Move on.
Very good point. Chances are more than good that the environment post-return would be hostile as those in charge would likely be finding ways to make you want to quit. Chalk this up as a learning experience and move on.
Thanks for all the advise and the support. I just wish I could keep the one job that I truley have a passion for.
Sorry to hear that josh. I hate to agree with the last two posts but that was just what I was thinking when I first read through. Thnigs just wouldn't be the same if you go back now, the environment will change for sure. I've been there, and it's like walking on eggshells. Still, sorry to hear that, overall it sounded like a pretty chill place to work.
Awwww that sucks Josh.... what did you do? (only read first post..... ill read the rest and maybe you said)....... Okay.... read further..... so I know the answer.... hmmm, well, if you need to go job searching, I'll go with you cause I need one.
