from what i've noticed from all the threads i've read about hair washing, everyone seems to wash their hair about once a week...and it's suggested to wash less often when dreads are first forming...

well i, unlike most of you (im guessing) i happen to smoke cigarettes, and not washing my hair for a full week would leave my hair smelling like an ashtray (my bangs usually smell kinda weird by the end of a single day, i dont smoke too much, 10 or less cigs a day, but it's enough to leave a stench) :(

was just wondering if anyone had any tips/hints as to ways to keep your hair smelling fresh in between washes :)

I make up a spray of water & my fave e/oils and just lightly spray it on in the morning.

^^^^ Does that stay smelling of the oils BC, just wondering, when I wash my hair with bronner's (yes I know I rinse it) but almost immediately I lose the smell of bronner's and my hair just smells clean, but just of hair if you know what I mean.

The smell usually lasts most of the day. I probably use more e/oils than Dr. Bronner's and I'm not rinsing right away, so the e/oils & their smells can be absorbed by my locks.

easier said than done, i do want to quit smoking cigarettes, because i know how absolutely terrible it is for me, and i personally dont like the smell, it bothers me...but, i do like cigarettes...

bcmama...i've never been real big into herbs and oils and the all natural products...so i really dont know exactly what you mean...what do you mean by "e/oils"? well...care to elaborate cause im lost? what kind of oil, where would i find it, stuff like that :)

...as a smoker, i've come to be a big believer in the power of febreze...that stuff is simply amazing...how badly would that hurt dreads (if at all)?

Yes I know, sorry it wasn't a very helpful comment. I am a former smoker (long time ago now). Anyway I am such a light weight now when I am near people who smoke, I just can't stand the smell anymore, and it does get wound up into my dreads if people are smoking in a room.

Essential oils can be found in any health food store and in most grocery and department stores. It may seem expensive for a little bottle, but just a few drops goes a looong way. (I pay $12 for a bottle of lavender, one of my faves, and it usually lasts at least 6 months)

Please don't use fabreeze on your locks!

It's full of gross chemicals that will probably leave residue and may dry out your locks. I know of a person that used it and that is what they told me anyways....

Febreeze would probably damage your hair and cause it to be dry and brittle, but I have no personal experience so I am not really sure.

You can wash your hair more often if you'd like, the reason they say not to wash often is because when they are real mature they can take awhile to dry. But if you want to wash every 2 days then do it.

I know there's a big vendetta against KB BUT i baught they're peppermint cooling spray in case my scalp got itchy (I absolutely cant stand an itchy scalp and hasn't happened yet). Anyways, i was at my friends party last weekend, in a basement full of smokers and me and my man came out with smelly smokey dreads. When we got home i sprayed our locks with the peppermint spray and it completely got rid of it. I'm not sure if it will work as well for someone that is a smoker, but it worked really well for us.
