Okay, so can I use perfume on the dreads? Just a light spritz of bath and body works?

I want to put off washing my new, fragile knots as long as I can...its only been three days and already I feel like my scalp may be smelling a little...musty. I'm used to washing my hair every single day.

So I was wondering if a little body spray would create build up or residue on the dreads/scalp?

p.s. I DO have some tea tree stuff which smells awesome...would a little of that make my scalp smell good?

You should wash your hair probably about once a week to twice a month. I wash my hair twice a week.

If you are really, really worried about how fragile your knots are, get a panythose stocking, and put that over your head. Wash your hair through that. It's possible, I did it years ago for my first set, when I didn't use rubber bands.

Putting smell-good on your locks is just a nice idea, for yourself and others. I use Nag Champa (very, very little - stuff is strong!). The Tea Tree oil sounds like a great idea for smell and scalp health!

    Any other questions?

    Namaste

wash your funky hair, dude. Perfume won't make it clean, then you'll just have perfumed stinky head. You don't have to use commercial shampoo, probably shouldn't IMO. But you do have to wash your head, scrub your scalp really well. Use Dr. Bronners if you like bubbles, but there are lots of other methods of cleaning your hair that does not involve the toxic chemicals found in most shampoos.

If you want a locks-shampoo that looks and feels like a regular shampoo, DreadHeadHQ makes a good product, but I prefer Dr. Bronners 20x.

DHHQ shampoo contains SLS, a nasty nasty chemical, and it isn't really any different than any cheap clarifying shampoo you can get at the grocery store. Dr. Bronners is liquid castille soap, not as foamy, but much better for your body and the environment.

hope you don't mind mb, just saving you time :)

it's just nasty nasty stff and i don't allow it (among MANY other chemicals) into my home

op, you'll need to wash your hair. if you want them to lock up, they need to be clean and residue free. i would never spray anything into my hair to make it smell good. i've not had a smell at all, but if i did, i'd wash more often with an all natural bar soap and/or fluff it with a bit, just a bit, of coconut oil or lavender/tea tree/patcholi oil.

I use Ivory soap...and I do plan on washing my hair regularly, of course! It hasn't been a week yet, though...and they're brand new.

    Here's the ingredients for Ivory...
Sodium tallowate, sodium cocoate or sodium palm kernelate, water, sodium chloride, sodium silicate, magnesium sulfate, and fragrance

I'm not down with all of the chemical sounding names though. I'll buy some Dr. Bronners...is Ivory okay to use until I get some?

    Oh...my....damn...

just gave in and washed my hair. This is the best my scalp has ever felt! And my lil dreadies are just fine, if a little furry. Okay, a lot furry. But I don't mind, it feels amazing! So go ahead...say "I told you so.."

I took a picture of my sopping locks to commemorate the baptism. ;)

Doesn't it feel better? :) If I were you, though, I'd definitely get the Bronner's before your next wash! :D Happy Knotting!

Before switching to Dr bronners it may be a wise idea to rinse your head with a apple cider vinegar mixture. That will ensure that any residue that is still hanging on to your locks will be washed away.

EW!!! :( Poor cows. I'm going to Sally's first thing in the morning then.

I can't believe I put cow in my hair. Why do they put confusing names on things? I guess that's the only way to sell it...

    Yeah, lard=tallow.. sodium tallowate..

I was upset to first learn that too, as I grew up on Irish Spring or whatever that soap is, and the smell will always equal my childhood to me.. then I realized... Lard~

And you know, I don't eat them, I'd rather my skin not either.

you need fat to make soap, doesn't need to be animal fat, but fat nonetheless.

knotdirty, sally's is not going to have a good, all natural soap. you best bet is a health food store. I'd try a chain grocery store in the natural food department before sally's for sure!

actually..... lard is pig fat. tallow is cow fat. same same, but different. that's why ivory has that perfume in it, to hide the smell of the tallow. find someone local who makes soap in their home. I've found that works best because the soap the local people make works best with the local water supply. just google something like "handmade, soap, your city" and see what you find. Or try local art and craft shows, county fair, events like that where people sell their handmade goods. I have also found that handmade soap tends to last about ten times longer than a bar of ivory, so it ends up not really costing that much more.

Ooo, we have the perfect place here. Its a little hold in the wall...they sell organic foods, oils, all that good stuff..I'm sure they make soap. I didn't even consider that place.

I can't get over the fact that I rubbed cow fat into my hair. Most likely all over my body in the past...agh.
