You mean a pap smear? If so, it's simply really. It only takes a few minutes. You will be asked to lie down on an exam table and put your feet in the stirrups, letting your knees fall to the sides. They'll more than likely have a sheet that will cover your legs and stomach. The doctor puts a speculum into the vagina, opening it to see the cervix and to do the Pap test. She or he will use a brush or swab to take a few cells from inside and around the cervix. The cells are placed on a small glass slide, then checked by a lab to make sure they are healthy. It's never hurt when I've had them, just a little discomfort.
Dont you love the big light, like a spot light, they shove right into your vagina , im like, could that light be any bigger... But yeah, its not too bad like hippychick said.. Its goes real fast and once its over you realize how silly it was for ya to be nervous and after a while you get so use to them, its like brushing your teeth
What?! They put a light in there?! I thought all put in was a speculum? I know my OB has a light that he turns on and brings closer so that he can examine, but that's it. My doctor talks to me throughout the procedure. It sounds funny, but at least I'm not laying there obsessing over what's going on. He asks about my kids, asks how my husband is doing, things like that.
eh, no big deal. usually there's a nurse present as well, to make sure there's no misconduct. like hippychick said, you just lie down pantless, the doctor inserts a speculum (unfortunately it's usually cold), uses a long cotton swab to get a couple of cells and voila, you're done! well, if they use lube to insert the speculum you'll have to wipe that up too (and they do overdo it sometimes) but otherwise it's fine.
Heheheh, sometimes I've felt like I had an oil slick going on down there after a pap because they've used sooo much lube!
it's not as scary as you might think. It is a bit uncomfortable cos they place a speculum inside you to open up your vagina and that can be painful. The key is to relax and concentrate on your breathing..The nurse takes a sample of your cervix mucus, so she inserts a some kind of cotton tip to extract a sample. It's all finished in less than 1 minute. It's not big deal, and its important for your health.
hot light on your wee wee, horrible scraping with a wire brush inside your vagina, perhaps a bit of bleeding after the fact, and the icky goo they use to cram the speculum into you. hate them. always feel violated.
When you find a doctor who runs the speculum under hot water for a min. or two before inserting (to warm it of course), you know you've found a good doc! They're not bad. Generally, it depends on how nervous you are, what point in your cycle you're at, how good the doc is, etc. Sometimes the scrape of the cotton swab can be a bit painful, but no worse than yanking a bandaid off and it only lasts like half a second. Usually, it's not even that bad. Also depending on where in my cycle I was, I have had a bit of spotting afterwards, like kc mentioned, but that's only happened a couple of times in my experience. You should definitely get one on a yearly basis. It's annoying, but at least it's better than a prostate exam!
the thing i hate the most is having my vag and ass all flung out there and exposed with some stranger looking at it. ugh.. *shudder*...
hmm I havent had one yet,but I think in the UK they start them when you are 21- which is soon. I'm glad you started this thread I'm a little nervous about my first one, good to know what to expect.
Well i made the app for monday!! i made on before but cancelled cause i was to scared lol. but i figured out this is the only part of my body im worried about and there is no reason for it. And it will be a huge weight lifted of my shoulders - if that makes sense. But i WILL go this time - proberly be nervous but has to be done. thanks for the advise x
haha, i agree... and if you have a male doctor how they call a nurse in when they exam you, so the nurse is just standing off to the side while he is examining you and everything, its like you're show and tell or when they check your breasts and so their squeezing your boobs and asking you questions like, "so any plans for the weekend" or "how about this weather, huh" im like, lets not conversate while you're touching my breasts
Heheheh, yeah, I have a male OB. He's a wonderful doctor, he helped deliver my babies, but I know what you mean about the show and tell. *lol*
