Since the movie forums are never frequented much I'll post this here. I watched Slumdog Millionaire today. I was expecting a dry morose look at the hardships of streets of Mumbai. Some pretentious piece of Oscar fluff where a starving Indian slum kid learns to read and goes to medical school. What I got was in all honesty, a triumph of the human spirit. A celebration of lust for life, with Jamal, an innocent yet realistic character pushing through insurmountable odds and being victorious through the force of his own will. The film somehow turned 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' into the most captivating thing I've seen in years. Probably one of my ten favorite films of all time. No kidding. The narrative was just so completely engaging and endearing. It'll win best picture this year and everyone should see it.
Dude, its so sad that more people haven't responded to this thread. I saw it at the movies with a close friend and we nearly wet our pants at the end out of love. Not only is it great for all those human qualities you mentioned, but it just totally rocks. The soundtrack kicks ass and its really entertaining. You know the director did Trainspotting right? Anyway, y'all should see it.
I think you would like it. Its not uber intellectual or arty, but its still quite endearing. Its very colourful and vibrant in a Bollywood sort of way.
Dude and freaking 28 days. Danny Boyle's truly matured brilliantly. I mean I really dug on trainspotting and 28 days. But this... Oh hell did it rock. Just all around a kickass movie. I want to watch it again today so kickass.
yeah the theatres in my city arent playing it yet either because they only show crappy movies that make money like marley and me. Luckily my friend pirated it and yes it is an amazing movie. Danny boyle is a great director.
I need to watch 28 days. Have you seen millions? I quite liked that movie. He has done some excellent BBC telemovies too.
Nah, although after Trainspotting and 28 days I should have checked it out. Still this though. This was something new for me. I'm so elated to have had the pleasure of watching that Slumdog was everything a movie should be. Everyone who can't find it in a theater, don't wait and pirate it now.
i've heard about it and really want to see it, especially after your shining review. wasn't it originally supposed to not even be released in theatres?
I hadn't heard that, but I could totally be wrong. Like I said, I wasn't even that interested in it from the descriptions, because I thought it was going to be way to grave of a cross cultural piece. "Look at these poor Indians" or something. I was absolutly wrong... bet it's playing at the draft house. I highly reccomend it.
That's so weird, we just had a long discussion about Slumdog Millionaire in my urban anthro class yesterday. And now you're posting a thread about it. Interesting..
great movie. definitely set a new standard for ending credits. from here on out, any movie ending in random, tandem dance gets two thumbs way up.
You know, that would be a nice story as well but kids like you would think its 'cliched' despite the fact its not cliched in the slightest for kids in that position.
I read the book, which annoyed me so much. I thought it would be a lot deeper than what it was and yeah, I thought it was alright but overrated. I haven't seen the movie, my friend told me it was really different to the book so I may do. Hopefully it won't be crap.
A film which isn't written or directed by people with experiences similar with what their trying to evoke will be hackneyed. I'm not saying that story couldn't be told well, just not as a studio produced film. Feel free to join the rest of us off the horse.
