Please, I have several Lakota friends and I want to put this out there. It is not Lakota 'Sioux'. Sioux came from white trappers, translates 'swine', and is derogatory and insulting. Stop calling them that. The Lakota have a long and wisdom filled history as gatherers of medicinal herbs and healers as well as many other great things which they contributed to all of our benefit, they are not 'swine'. On that note : Nez Perce , 'pierced nose'. I don't know how they feel about that but the gist is made. While we wile away the hours worried about what our govt does across an ocean, cultural genocide and debasing/disenfranchising takes place right here on US soil everyday to our true forebearers. Throwing out a discussion.
no prob, lakota sounds cooler anyway, I had been using them interchangeably, now I have a reason not to
Wow, I never knew that. Native American culture is so respectful of humanity and nature, it doesn't deserve insults. So would a Lakota person answer get offended if you called them Sioux even if you didn't know the true meaning?
Can only speak for my friends, no they wouldn't deck you or anything, they'd probably just tell you what it means and ask you not to call them that. It's still in textbooks as well, so if it comes up in a class why not bring it up and point it out? Maybe over time it will rightfully dissappear and be recognized for what it is.
I'm used to seeing Sioux in history books too, its really messed up. Next time someone refers to 'the Sioux' I'll correct them and tell them what it really means.
If you think that's bad, you should hear what "squaw" means. That is NOT a respectful term for a Native American woman.
Wow...I never knew that. I knew about "squaw", though. I'm part Cherokee and since I found out, I've been reading a lot more into the culture and history...
Thank you for telling me, I never knew. It's sad in this day and age we've never corrected these things, or at least not in an official manner, so many people just have no idea
Geez. Well I've never run into any Lakota people thank god! (Cause I might've insulted them) But I'll remember that if I hear the word again and tell the person what it's supposed to mean!
Thanks man. I had no idea either. I remember it being in our textbooks too....that's pretty messed up
Yeah, don't do that. That's one definite way to recieve a ladies boot up the posterior and whoever would do so would rightfully deserve it(and imho, deserve that and much more). I am not going to repeat the translation here, enough to know, very bad. and btw this is a good link to a soundtrack for this thread: http://208.16.194.119:8010/listen.pls It's a shoutcast stream, should open up for most sc compatible, but if you're not using it, I have a ton of drums. Be glad to supply new music.
Wow! I'm slightly impressed. I was really expecting you to have a bigger ego than that. No hard feelings, but I doubt if you and I have the same definition of "grow up". I don't even take my own problems seriously.
