If a tree falls in the forest, and there's no-one around, does it make a sound? I heard one time that if there is no ear drum to vibrate against, there is no sound? shit.
ive thought about this, and it doesnt matter at all what the answer is. the only way to correctly answer the question is by use of the definition of the word sound, which is "the sensation produced by stimulation of the organs of hearing by vibrations transmitted through the air or other medium. " so if there isnt an eardrum to pickup the vibrations, then the tree does not make a sound
yes sound exists whether or whether not a person is there... Just because no one is there to witness it doesn't mean that it doesn't happen. Sound is just another of the things that happens. sound isn't dependent on people being near, sound doesn't care who is listning..if you leave your computer speakers running in your room and everyone leaves the house then they will still be playing.
if that eardrum thing is true then put a recorder in a forest when a tree falls if thats true then technically doesnt that mean that the recorder is going to record silence, but then when you listen to it there will be something on the tape?
Asylum seems to have nailed it, it all depends on your definition of the word sound. Like asylum says the most common definition of sound is "vibration as percieved by the sense of hearing" or some varient of that. Therefore the awnser is no, if a tree falls and there is no one around to hear it, it does not make a sound, it does however make a noise.
It doesn't mean that sound is produced, it means vibrations are produced. But those can't even be proven if we can't detect it. Our perception is the only way we define unrealities as true. Without them nothing exists, so based on some electrical signals we are.
