Okay now someone was trying to lecture me and tell me that mushrooms were better for you than acid and I disagreed because I was under the impression that, that was just speculation because shrooms are natural and acid is synthetic. From what I understand theyre not exactly sure what psychedellics do to your brain. I may or may not be right about this so I was wondering, is one safer for you than the other? I know a kid who jumped off a balcony and amsterdam on shrooms and died, I have also had some of my most intense trips on high doses of shrooms (never again will I eat more than 1/8th), and more often than not I end up not having as intense of a time on acid. Also I read somewhere that HPPD can be caused from both mushrooms, acid or any other psychedellic for that matter and other substances such as MDMA, MDA, & MMDA. So from what I can tell mushrooms may have a higher LD50 compared to acid, but it isnt neccesarily better for you though its natural, after all its poisonous and the toxins are what you make trip so can anybody help me out here?

Psilocybe mushrooms have no lsd, lsd has lsd. Mushrooms have psilocybin. Both are perfectly safe, but psychologically, both can be terribly dangerous. And last time I checked, it was LSD-25. I agree with you, being "natural" does'nt stand well.

I assume these comments are in relation to the term "LD50"?

"LD50" is not a drug, but an abbreviation that means "Lethal Dose, 50%", a rough indicator of exactly how toxic a substance is. It is the amount of a particular substance needed to kill 50% of a given population of test animals. In order to be meaningful, an LD50 figure will specify route of ingestion (oral, inhaled, IV, IM, or SQ injection, absorbed through skin, etc.), as well as the species of animal used in the study. An LD50 figure is usually given in terms of amount per unit of body weight. The LD50 for LSD in mice is given as 300ug/kg, via IV injection. I couldn't locate an LD50 for psilocybin during a short search.

LSD is one of the least toxic drugs known, physically speaking. People have survived doses of thousands of times normal, with no long-term damage at all. There has only been one known overdose fatality, and that person injected over 3200 times the normal dose intravenously, probably mistaking pure crystalline LSD for some other drug.

no, lsd-25 refers to the chemical lsd-25. lsd as in Lyserg-Säure-Diaethylamid, and 25 as in it was the 25th chemical that albert hoffman was researching in his studies at the time...

ellis, of all people i thought you'd catch that ;)

actually, Aldous Huxley, if i recall correctly, received an intravenous injection of LSD on his death bed. i assumed that's what killed him, but i could be wrong.

as for the rest of these posts:
natural vs. synthetic has nothing to do with safety. there is no correlation. there are things in nature that kill, violently. there are synthesized things that kill, violently. there are things in nature that heal and/or produce positive effects. and, there are synthetics that heal and/or produce positive effects. it all has to do with the chemical molecules, not whether they are naturally occuring or not.
acid is not dangerous, nor are shrooms. acid is not worse than shrooms in terms of safety. the LD50 for acid is incredibly difficult to reach. the LD50 for shrooms is incredibly difficult to reach. people on shrooms have fallen to their deaths. people on acid have fallen to their deaths. acid doesn't make you crazy. shrooms don't make you crazy. do not listen to paranoid-provoked myths and/or other bullshit. a chemical is a unique entity and we all react slightly differently to each one. a few rare people are affected to the point where their judgment can no longer protect their own lives. this doesn't mean you are one of those people. stop being scared and go have fun and safe trips. peace....

oh yeah, only some shrooms grow in cowshit. most do not. many are grown indoors in substrates such as bird seed, rye berries, straw, dung, even popcorn, and much more. out in the wild, it is common to find them in grasslands and wooded areas though if you live where it rains a lot and where horse and cow shit are abundant, then you will be likely to also find shrooms in such shit.

@nesta: Ellis was pointing out the fact that the original poster had said "LD50", and meant that, and not "LSD-25". While I've got a pretty good idea that the original poster is still pretty flimsy on conveying his/her question, I think what they were asking was whether or not mushrooms are physically more dangerous than LSD, or vice versa.

From a theoretical standpoint, with mushrooms you're going to die from liver/kidney failure far before your reach the actual point of lethal intoxication, unlike LSD, where no bodily damage would occour until after LSD had already subliminalized your nervous system into no longer breathing.

In reality, however, neither one is even somewhat dangerous, so long as you're eating what you're supposed to. ;)

    huxley...
aldous huxley was dying of cancer...
22 nov 63 he had his wife inject 100 ug lsd, followed by another 100 ug a couple hours later...
no way that was a lethal dose - he just knew he was dying that very day & decided to go out with "eyes wide open" rather that in an opiate haze...

(see the death scene of dr mcphail's wife in huxley's _island_ )

    No shit? :)

I was referring to the second poster's apparent misunderstanding of the first..

He seemed to think that the OP was claiming that mushrooms contained LSD, and mistyped "LSD-25" as "LD50".

hmm...i think you really read into the second post, then. to me it just was saying they're two different things...no acid in mushrooms, no psilocin in blotter...different drugs with somewhat different risks that can't really be judged with one thing labelled as "better" or "worse" for you than the other...
