lotr includes the hobbit of course

when I was a kid I read the first 4 potter books but stopped after that. bythe time 5 came around I'd lost interest

as for LotR I read the hobbit in 7th grade and liked it and have tried reading LotR but always stop around a hundred pages or so in. I think I made it halfway through Two Towers some time in middle school but I didn't really get much of it

I'll read through both eventually but what to do first?

LOTR is incredible, I love Middle Earth. But I did read Harry Potter too. It's easier to read and not quite as good, but really it's not terrible at all if you enjoy fantasies.

Both are good and The Greatest books but Lord of the Rings is the Great and all time good. I think you should read the LOTR

Lord of the Rings if you want something truly epic. Harry potter if you just want something light and fun.

I read both, and I recommend both... Start with the Lord of the Rings, and keep Harry Potter as "light reading".

For Lord of the rings you really have to push yourself past the songs and poetry but everything else is really great.

LOTR is always good, but is definitely for a mood of heavier reading. Tolkien is masterful, his writing is very thick and very rich. just to play devils advocate here i'm gonna say start with Harry Potter. think of it as a warm up round? lol ^_^
