You know it's now cold and flu season. And there is a time proven way to shorten the duration of a cold. Drink plenty of water. A doctor I knew once kept leaving the room. When I asked him why, he said he had a cold. And he was drinking a cup of water every hour.

You know zinc lozenges aren't proven. And they are expensive. Drinking plenty of fluids is proven to knock a cold out of you by thinning your mucous secretions. That and getting plenty of bed rest, doctors say.

I find that drinking a good amount of water is a cure for most little ills and pains.

It keeps you hydrated, which is important.

Not only does it thin the mucous (very important for those of us with COPD, asthma or colds/flu/covid, it keeps the blood flowing!

If you are sitting around feeling cold, drink some water! You'll be surprised at the result.

Thanks for the post @Jimbee68 !

    #1. Chicken Soup
#2. Hot Herbal Tea with honey and lemon
    #3. Lots of water
    #4. Fresh Orange juice
    #5. Warm bath
    #6. Neti Pot
    #7. Bed rest

Warm drinks are essential. OJ will loosen the mucus in the throat quickly. Neti Pot will clear out your sinuses so you can breathe easy.

In addition to what's been mentioned, my mother uses garlic cloves soaked in honey as an immune booster. I haven't tried them out myself yet, but those hippie home remedies work wonders!

Since we cook most of our food, a couple of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) tablets can help. We normally need about 30mg per day, but a few days on 500mg is the shock treatment and has no side effects. It puzzles most doctors, but they admit that it is true.

    Good advice @wilsjane!

We often forget the importance of good nutrition with enough vitamins, I'm heading to the Vitamin C right now...

I read someplace, somebody's somebody was a retired doc and when he felt the first tinge of a cold, he took a teaspoon or so of baking soda and water a few times a day to adjust the body's pH. The baking soda guys actually marketed it for cold and flu years a go. I've fended off a few colds - you know when you are just getting one, that shitty feeling, beginnings of congestion and sore throat - I take a few doses a day and it seemed to do the trick. Mix it up with as much water you can gulp down and follow with a water chaser. Tastes bad for a while, but water clears it out. Works awesome for bad heartburn, too. I had been using Zicam zinc gel in my nose for the same reason....not sure if it really did much, but at that point, you'll sure try.

Also known as Alka Seltzer. Carbonated water. Good for removing stains if used quickly.

All in all, like I yell at my wife, just stay the hell away from sick people. Keep your hands clean. Keep your hands out of your mouth, nose and eyes. Be respectful of others when you are sick and when you sneeze and cough on the damn airplane....people still haven't learned that the polite little rolled hand when you cough does nothing but splatter it all over. My last trip a few weeks ago, i just cringed in the airplane listening to inconsiderate people sneeze snot and cough all over....but I would be the 'weird guy' if I put a mask on..
