Just wondering what music has ever genuinely frightened you. I don't scare easy, but the following have produced various sustained or momentary shit-ups on me. Desolate - Zan Lyons A little place called trust - the paper chase Come To Daddy - Aphex Twin Only - Morton Feldman Strange Fruit - Billie Holliday
Black angels death song- VU that's about the only one, oh and this one time is was stoned and I listened to the 2nd intheflesh from The Wall and I swear it was demonic.
Any song by the horrifying band Wolf Eyes who I had the displeasure of seeing once. Chelsea Girls by VU and Nico
Just jumped someone with an unmarked link to a Wolf Eyes mp3. Their response was along the lines of: "....h-... have I just been raped??" I'm guessing you saw them supporting Sonic Youth and Le Tigre. I don't get why they did that either. I've never seen them but from what I just heard, yes, definitely should be on here. If you listen to Nine Inch Nails really loud, there's usually some really freaky stuff going on in the background, quite unnerving. Also "Brain Damage" by Pink Floyd, and "Slush" by the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, bother for the same reason: creepy laughter.
I actually saw them before they opened those shows, and was very surprised that they even got that gig. They live just up the road in Michigan so they come play occasionally. There is becoming a big noise scene here, and all of these djs and bands play at this abandoned factory that artist kids have taken over. I saw them play there with like 300 kids staring at them (in the words of my friend) "like it was something important."
Yeah, Come to daddy was pretty scary. I was so stoned the first time I saw the movie for it, and it was like 2 in the morning. Bad idea! Alot of venetian snares and Gabber god can be very scary, but I don't see anything in noise. Some people are all into it, I just think it's boring.
Venetian Snares make some great music, a good band to check out for something similar is Jansky Noise Locomotive, they do some very odd things. I get what you mean about noise though, I got into it, but it doesn't really scare me because I know it's coming. I'll keep on recommending that Paper Chase record though. It never gets any easier to listen to, just when you think you're comfortable with it you notice something more unnerving elsewhere.
I went to bed listening to Pink Floyd one night and the song One Of These Days came on and i was in a tired trance like state and then all i heard was "one of these days days im gonna chop you into little pieces" haha that freaked me out. and Time makes me jump when the clocks start even when i know its coming =)
what a great thread, selfcontrol! i was thinking about songs like that just the other day. i should make a shit-you-up cd since halloween's coming up.
One band comes to mind......well not really cause I cant remember the name, but the lead singer was featured on the doc "Kurt and Courtney"............. the guy who said courtney propositioned him to kill kurt, and then apparhently after he did the interview he "supiciously was run over by a train". He had made a video where he was doing some s&m shit and his music was just disturbing to say the least.
The Doors - "The End" Arthur Brown - "Creation" Pink Floyd - "Careful With That Axe, Eugene" [Live, Ummagumma]
radiohead - we suck young blood... sounds like a sad song at first... but it's a slow song and on the afterbeat you hear a handclap... the handclap just freaks me out, makes me feel very desperate... well listen to the song.
Something that honestly frightened me? Led Zeppelin - Traveling Riverside Blues hee hee... Ooo I'm frightened.
There's this band called Schloss Tegal that use EVP (electronic voice phenomena, basically the voices if the dead) in their songs. Pretty un-nerving
Hmm, I don't know if I put the right one down. I'm talking about the Zeppelin song with the real dirty guitar riff, makes you think of nasty, hillbilly sex. And Robert Plant sings the "Squeeze my lemon" line... frightening I hope I got the right title.
......... ... ..... what the fuck?!?! thats gotta be blasphemous somewhere... lol, i just got chills...
