Shamanism is the original Mystic religion still practiced today by tribal people from Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, the Caribbean and North and South America.

Basically, Shamanism is the practice of changing one's consciousness to benefit the community. The Shaman uses meditative techniques such as prayer, fasting, ritual music and dance, drugs, ceremony, and other repeatable, meaningful experiences to achieve a primal consciousness, to go from the popular reality of the community to the original "unaltered" consciousness and, most importantly, back again.

A Shaman wisely and sanely controls his or her own altered state of consciousness in order to reach a primal state. In this state, he seeks practical insight into the healthy physical, social, psychological and spiritual state of being for individuals and for the tribe itself.

The Shaman may take the role of priest, psychiatrist, physician, herbalist, teacher, guidance counsellor, exorcist, whatever is necessary to maintain the tribe. A true Shaman, by necessity, is a highly disciplined healer. His or her work is complete only upon returning to the consciousness of the tribe to bring back insight, wisdom and practical solutions.

You have to find your own overview, and it may well take you years to do so - don't believe half of what is written on the topic - a lot of it is 100% BS.
