As the nights get longer, around mid-late Aug. the plants will indicate sex.

Males indicate first, by growing "balls" (pollen sacs).
The females begin to develop buds a week or 2 later.
You can't go wrong if you immediently rip up any plants that grows balls. You have a few days between the time they are first noticable and when they open and start shedding pollen, so don't delay. Check your plants often during Aug.

    Yes.
Just remember, when the soil is covered the water already in the soil can't evoparate. This will either cause root rot (which can kill a plant) or retard it's growth.

My suggestion is to insure excellent drainage and cover only when it's raining. When the rain stops, uncover.

Thanks rangerdanger, unfortunately I cannot always get to the plants when it rains. Maybee i should try raising the pot of the ground a little to help with drainage.
Its my first attempt at outdoors after some initial trouble with slugs the plants seem to be ok, there about 18 inches tall . Didn't plant out untill 10th june.

You have to cross a river then go through six foot high nettles to reach them.

Raise the container off the ground and drill more holes in the bottom if possible.
