Sent a letter to my state reps...

The other day i sent a letter to my state reps pertaining to the States' Rights To Medical Marijuana Act.... This bill would reschedule marijuana under federal law so those states that wish to legalize the medical use of marijuana under state law could do so without federal interference. If this bill were approved by Congress, federal prosecution of patients who qualify for medical use under state law would end, and states could actually provide medical marijuana to patients who qualify under state law...... so anyways..... i've only gotten one response yet... and well it didnt really say much of anything...... I guess i at least got a response from him... thats worthy of somethin that he actually took the time to read my letter and respond...

Thank you for writing me regarding the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes.

As you may know, the federal government has no current law recognizing the medical use of marijuana. However, some states have passed medical marijuana initiatives legalizing the use and distribution of the substance for treatment of patients.

On May 14, 2001, the United States Supreme Court found, despite state laws to the contrary, medical necessity was not a defense to federal prohibition of marijuana use since controlled substances statute unambiguously classified marijuana as having no medical benefits warranting exception (United States v. Oakland Cannabis Buyers' Coop).

In the 2001 U.S. Supreme Court ruling, the court clearly indicated that federal drug laws take precedence over state laws and thus bar doctors from prescribing illegal drugs as well as suppliers from selling illegal drugs. Under this ruling, the DEA will continue to enforce the Federal law.

If this issue should be deliberated upon by the Senate in the 108th Congress, please know that I will keep your views in mind.

Another minnesotian huh... I would rather push for a law more like Alaska has!
