I think it means that the will damage the membrane so your water breaks. But according to my nonprofessional oppinion, the doc should not do that unless you are ove the due date or the baby is in danger. Everyday that the baby is in there means better development. One should not induce early labor!!! Some docs do shit nowadays....

Maybe ask brighit, she's a midwife and on this forum, usually in the parenting forum, she'll give you advice!

There is no reason to do this. Why not just wait until you go into labor naturally? Although many babies are OK at 37 weeks, many are not. Rented a pump to a mother last week who had a 37.5 week little boy, "planned c section" with, of course, no testing of the fluid for lung maturity. Guess what? He was born with "premature lung syndrome.' He couldn't yet breathe. He's STILL in the hospital, and he is only a week away from his "given" due date.

Let your body go into labor naturally.

Stripping the membranes is done to induce labro. although it doesn't always work. The person iserts a gloved hand into the crevix and sweeps around the amniotic sac loosening it from the lower rim of the cervix. The goal is to loosen the adherence of the bag but NOT put a hole in it. This releases hormones that may get labor going. This procedure does have risks, including accidentally rupturing he bag, which, if you are going to birth in a hospital means you will probably be admitted and you will need to deliver within a certain amount of time or they will begin more aggressive methods to get labor going. It can be uncomfortable to have done. It may not do anything at all. I have done my best to give you the facts and a fact is having this done does have risks. You are not overdue so there is really no medical reason you've mentioned to have it done. Labor will start when the baby is ready. If I were you, I'd wait. Second labors tend to be shorter and you are already thinning and dilating. If your last baby was early you should try to hold on to this one as long as you can. Your baby will come when they are ready.!

    what Maggie said :)

If it were me, I'd be refusing any further internal vaginal exams. It's your right to make your own informed decisions, and to refuse anything your doctor suggests. So first, inform yourself. Know the pros and cons, and make the right decision for you.
