Pretty incredible technology when you think about it. Frankenstein is not so far away right now. The brain is "derived from rat brain cells" which is incredible. Think about it.. its almost a new pandora's box situation.

How can they tell it "remembers" for 12 seconds? It's like when they say goldfish only have 2 second memories, like how can they tell???

They send an electrical pulse into the neurons and that pulse is still detected from the neurons up to 12 seconds later.

Very impressive. Not sure if you can count an electrical pulse as a memory.

It's a myth about goldfish having such a short memory, they can be trained to go through mazes and nudge levers for food and stuff like that, proving that they have long term memories.

Wouldn't it be weird if 50 years from now Intel was building computer processors with a mixture of silicon wafers and rat brain paste as the cores? I guess they'd need to run rat brain processors at exactly 32 deg Celsius so the neural tissues won't die and combination power / food supply.

And then you could eat your CPU if you ran out of food. Or cure a hide with it. I think they'd be more likely to use nano-technology to replicate the organic nature of the brain tissue, rather than use actual brain cells.

I am truly stunned by that article. Amazing to think what science can do. Thanks for great link!

The memory is the pattern that the neuron connections make. So after the "pulse", the memory is stored, semi-permanently in the arrangement of the neurons (as the neurons can rearrange themselves later).

They're finally getting to the crux of what memory is.

It's associations mapped out by our neurons in our brain...

Our brains are in a constant state of flux, with associations changing moment to moment.

But as we age, the changes become less and less as we become more fixed in our behaviors and the way we view the world.

Dropping Acid rearranges things big time, but successive doses do less and less...

    Is it making sense yet?

I'm starting to think that our emotions play a huge part in our memory, especially creating stronger than usual links, deleting parts of events, highlighting other parts. So yes, emotions may help us decide what to forget and what to remember, based upon our emotional reaction.

Again it's all about what gets associated with which emotion. I think all experiences get routed thru the emotion circuit, which then decides where to route the experience in our memory. Then the experience remaps certain areas of our brain.

So the emotion center (the amygdalae) is our router to memory...

Scientists are so busy asking the questions about "how can we do these things?" But hardly ever take a moment to ask if they "should be doing these things."

This sort of research will eventually lead to our own extinction.

Bumper sticker: If it weren't for flashbacks, I'd have no memory at all.
