On the outside, it looks like a wealth of knowlege, and if you do well, you can do anything. Did a little deeper... well, yes, school is great, but do we really need to do all of this homework and learn ALL of this? Oh well, I'll continue to do well. A little bit more... This is so repetitive. Can't we do anything different? And why do they always tell us what to do? why does it have to be so boring? Finally. This is bullshit. I am wasting my time here. This is injust to put a child in an enviroment like this by law. They constantly try to shape out minds to fit the government's mold, and this is restricting my right to be happy. There are many other ways to do this. Any of your own thoughts on school? I never see any discussions on this and I hate it when people say 'Don't worry, when you get out of it, it'll be much better.' I don't care if it'll get better. It is still injustice. If I were to have a child, I don't want him or her to be in a system as terrible as this. Why is it that because I am a human, I must do this, simply because I have the brain and the certain genes to do so? It's all confusing me, it's hard to gather words to express thoughts. So I'd like to hear yours! I just think school is unjust on so many levels.
School is good but could always be better, in some places more then others. Of course it gets boring at times, not everyone likes the same subjects and for some people certain subjects are not relevant at all indeed. And everything gets repetitive if you have to fill whole parts of your day with it. Try working
I've found that at school, I only learn the things I want to learn or find interesting, and all the rest of the time is just spent messing around. Oh well. We shall see whether or not this plays well for me in the future. I tend to challenge authority, but only if I'm being prohibited from doing something that I actually care about, or being penalised for something ridiculous and petty, in which case I'll challenge the rules with intelligence and reasoning, instead of just rebelling for the sake of it (...well, I do that sometimes as well. I can't help it! It's too much fun!) I'm in a school where people seem to take it all sooooo seriously and they're just like 'Work! Exams! Gotta get all A*s so I can get into the best Uni!' I'm just like...relax. I think school is a good thing, obviously, but I don't think it or the things you do there should be what defines you or your life. I think my daddy put it best: You grow up in spite of your education, not because of it.
well of course "they" are going to try to use schools to mold the minds of the young to their liking. if "they" tried when people are old enough to think for them selfs every one would realize how stupid it is and walk out.
Yes, school sucks, It only make otherwise intelligent children in to "repeaters". They learn to repeat what they have been told, god forbid they question what they are taught! "teach your children well" Giving the responsibility to another is not a good option
my father always tells me "you're not at school for my sake, for the teacher's or anyone elses benefit, you're there for you, to get an education". it makes sense; no one else gives two shits whether you turn up and sit and zone out or if you walk away at the end of the compulsory years having learnt and gained from it. having said that, i do agree, that a lot of stuff seems pretty irrelevant. could be made far more interesting and interactive rather than sitting inside at desks all year round cramming for exams. we should explore subjects in more depth and have more discussions about peoples opinions etc.
does anybody have anything good to say? (not saying that what you other people have said aren't good)
I'd recommend doing your best in school anyway, if you have to be there. It just creates more options in the future. Unless you've got better things to do!
I definitely have a problem with the public school system, even how "school" is taught in general in today's society. Is it brainwashing? yes. Is most of the shit you learn neccesary? not really. I graduated in 07.... I feel that 75% of the things they tried cramming in my head have been forgotten or were completely uneccesary.
School systems are not perfect but they still are very useful. It's better to try to make the best of it or even improve it than skip all the classes. Of course the views of the policy are often pointed towards a certain direction, but the system is not evil or out to brainwash you or anything. Just saying, I hope people don't use that as an excuse for dropping out
I honestly don't think it's brainwashing (and not just because I have been brainwashed, haha) It's just a badly broken system. And while it's usually ineffective (I still can't do math, and I've graduated) there are some good things to be had. There are actually still some teachers out there who are decent and even great. Many have just been beaten down by the system and by having to teach idiots all the time, so they no longer try to be innovative, or actually teach anything in-depth. Or they're lazy or they're idiots. It's a vicious circle. One of the last great teachers I had did a whole section on Crime and Punishment, a huge in-depth analysis deal (which I loved, but whatever) and got nothing but bitching the entire time.
okay school can and does suck ass for most kids... we're just not meant to be in boxes, studying boxes while we sit behind and under more boxes. That being said - more than likely you're going to have only 2 choices: drop out and homeschool yerself - google it if you need. the 2nd choice is make the most of it. PARTICIPATE in the moment...start a poetry club, make art and put it up without permission. Intend to be helpful - creative and constructive. You are only limited by your imagination and the will to see your vision through. Make your school better now! help with recycling, help make a garden, music club, humanities appreciation, etc. Boredom is a CHOICE! Choose to be proactive!!! =D okies i hope this helps bro... let yer love light shine! song
I have some serious issues with the school system--last year I wrote a 15-page senior thesis paper (for high school--least useless thing I've ever written in school) about alternative education and, basically, the faults of the school system. Basically, I think that, yes, school is boring, and, yes, I think that a large part of school is kneading students' minds into pre-determined shapes. The people, the students, don't matter. At my school especially--our education program is seriously suffering, but we're spending our money on expensive TVs we don't use and new carpeting when the old looks and works just fine, just to improve the aesthetic to the community. My two biggest problems with school, though, are things that I feel could and should be easily fixed. First of all, I feel like students are told what and how much they can learn, and how creative they can be. I don't think this is okay at all--all students should be encouraged to use their brain to its full capacity, regardless of what that means for their educational process. I spent my entire school career being pushed back by teachers so I wouldn't learn more than the other students. Where is the sense in that? I was put in higher classes to "learn at my own pace," then I was told I was learning too much, too fast. My second and even bigger problem with school is probably a completely personal problem--the atmosphere itself just doesn't seem healthy or workable to me. The silence, the claustrophobic classrooms (my school is mostly underground), the same hallways, the same settings, the repetitive actions and, most of all, the set-up of the classrooms. I have an enormous issue with the straight lines of tiny desks that teachers put you in all day long. I am not going to learn in that type of environment, because I can't concentrate on anything but how unpleasant the environment is. I've tried.
Some links for you to explore. There is a homeschooling board in the forums and there are more folks out there that think like you do. Have fun on the journey! http://www.altruists.org/downloads/by_subject/others/education/ http://www.sandradodd.com/unschooling http://gracellewellyn.com/ Check out "The Teenage Liberation Handbook". Rise out or not, it is a great read.
hell yeah! check out the rest of the site y'alls. check out their books, aswell, a lot of their literature is really useful (like the anarchist cookbook); and to the OP, you might be interested in the book Evasion.
