This year I've decided to do something different for school lunches. I find it always a pain knowing what to make and keeping it varied. I just recently finished a menu for my 11 year old daughter that she can use to pick her choices for the week. i.e. Pita Wraps, Rolled Sandwiches etc. I put it up on our site hoping someone may benefit from it. I'm gonna try this out and see how it works and then I'll change the menu up every so often. I made it printable so the kids can fill in their choices and on which day they would like to have each item We'll see how it goes. Let me know what you think. http://www.thegourmetlife.com/cooking_with_your_children/5_day_school_lunch_menu_introduction.html
Cool. That looks like a good idea. My kids are so picky, though. Their school lunches are so much better than what I had when I was a kid. They already have a lot of healthy choices every day. Still they complain.
The local schools around here start Tuesday. The school menus were in the newspaper this week. Mon: NO SCHOOL Tues:Chicken burgers,French fries, lettuce, tomato, applesauce, milk Wedizza, veggies, pudding, milk Thru:Spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, bread, peaches, milk Fri: NO SCHOOL It costs $1.75 for lunch at this school in Wentworth,NH. Parents are allowed to eat at school for $2.50
Our school lunches SUCK!!!! My 17 dd is a vegetarian, and there is barely anything for her to eat. Basically a pretzel, fries (yuck) or a plain salad, which gets pretty boring. She refuses to bring food. I don't know why they won't put better choices on the High School menu. HS lunch at our school costs about $3.50 average, and no, parents are not allowed. Moon said they just put a cheese sub on the menu, it is 3.50 by itself, without a drink or anything. Sage is in K so doesn't eat lunch at school, but I know it took us years just to get JUICE on the menu, all they had to drink was cow milk and my kids don't touch it. But you have to bring a note from your doctor that you are either lactose intolerant or milk allergic to be allowed the juice in your lunch. I just wrote one for Lennon myself, Ain't nobody gonna check. I wasn't going to pay 150.00 for a doctor visit to get a freaking note. The dairy industry has our schools by the short hairs.
That with the milk is baad!! how can they force people to drink it? (anything forced would be bad...) I was in an american overseas school that had a lunch programm, and we had water to drink (it changed from nothing to water) I am glad it wasn't coke (as that country was full of coke) The catholic school that I attended had a lunch programm (unlike german public schools, but they are from 8:00 -1 pm so no need for lunch) and we got fruit and herbal tees there for drink, it's cheep, and its basically as good as water, and contains no sugar. The food was cheap, it was back then 2.50 DM, which is about 1.20 $, and it was good food. Mostly Traditional german cuisine, but they had good vegetarian alternatives. And there were always vegetables and salads, as a "side dish". But why doesn't your daughter carry any home made lunch? I had a cool Lunch group at the American school that I attended, (after choices were limited, and the one choice got baaaaaaaad) And we always shared what we had, it was so kool, since everyone was from a different country, and you would get german food, indonesian food, korean food, and american food in one place! It was really nice, and I am still friends with most of the people, even though I haven't seen them since 7 years.
Moon just refuses to bring a lunch. I can't force her. I have bought her good food, and she doesn't bring it. She's 17, what can I say? When Moon was in grade school, I would send a juice box for her to drink, but they would MAKE her put the milk on her tray. So she would give it to kids who wanted more (shit we paid for it!) then they made a "no sharing" rule to protect, get this, the kids with peanut allergy (the Milk Board is obviously more powerful than the peanut board in the USA) so they would make her put the milk on her tray then make her open it and throw it away at the end of lunch. I tried to reason with them "Why are you teaching FOOD WASTE to our children? When an other child could use the food?" And I got nothing but bullshit from them. I REALLY WANT to move out of the village we are in. It is so fucking corrupt, the schools are going down the toilet, and the letter of the law means more than the meaning of it. Freakin Republicans in our School Board...............
