I will always remember the time when we were trying to sort out a problem and a guy came up with that reply every time. The boss, a well known film director, responded, "Next time you say that to me, I will fire you and buy a parrot." The poor guy narrowly avoided making his stock answer. Do you expect to have to just say yes to your boss, of have to give some input all the time.
I learned long ago to keep my mouth shut at times... but sometimes you just have to point out the obvious, in a non-confrontational way.
My problem is taking the whole thing over. Then suddenly realising that if things don't work out, I will carry all the blame. My worse one was ignoring the Odeon directors and persuading Franco Zeffirelli to open La Traviata at the Haymarket. My job was really in the line that day, but fortunately it broke the box office records. I knew that it was the right location, but I had a few sleepless night while leading up to the premier, knowing that opera had never worked on film previously. But this was different, it had been brought out of the opera house onto locations. Teresa Stratas was wonderful, particularly in the closing scene. The only problem was since most or my staff preferred Star Wars, I had to run more than 300 performances.
The employer/big boss(we also have a small boss) i work for,is open to suggestions/discussions, but if he made his mind up and gets pissed about it, i do shut up.....these days we also have a lot of managers who dont listen,i am the kind of person, who does says i told you so I do have alot of respect for my employer, seeing he build a 4 person buisness to 70+ atm and still growing. And i get treated very well, respect/freedom/pay. Mzzls
Doing it in a non-confrontational way can be my difficulty. When something is so obvious to me I can't understand why it's not obvious to everyone else and, so, if (for example), I am told to do something that I know is wrong, I can become frustrated and almost dismissive of that person because "they really ought to know", simply because I know. It's a failing on my part. I don't do what I am told simply because I am told to. I never have. A couple of senior management and one business owner (over the years), have thanked me for resisting and, later, asked me several times what my thoughts were on some other issues. Not that they followed my advice/opinion, but they showed they weren't mentally siloed.
