* black hair, been going almost 2 years neglect (though i did separate them if they got too knotted). My stupid cousin got the dumb idea in my head. And I do agree if they were done right, getting them re-twisted at a saloon may make them look more professional but... dude I only got one head of hair and don't wanna F things up. Anyone have experience with this? Advice? *Right now, the bottom tips and some of my dreads are still swirly/haven't formed a proper straight dread. That's the only part I'm not confident about... Peaceness. :afro:
Gonna sound racist but some white people don't realize how painfully slow black hair can grow or change. Also I have really soft hair. Some dreads are fully formed, some are still forming shaping together, and the tips and ends aren't like dreads yet.
Honestly, at 3 years race doesn't matter much. Those babies have already formed into who they're gonna be. IMO, re-twisting them is going to force them into something their not, and that's probably gonna cause damage. I would say let these ones run their course and next time (if you decide there is a next time) think about doing that from the start. Yes, I talk about dreads like they're a living creature :2thumbsup:
Got it. I looked back @ some dates. I guess it's been 2 years! lol. But yeah... I don't want to fuck with them too hard myself. Dreads are living creatures! Mine talk to me all the time
You're past the point where it about evens out. Roots should NOT be locked, they're fucking roots. Tips may or may not lock, ever, but if you're talking about getting them to blunt, that just happens on really old locks. If they twist your multi year old locks, they're going to do nothing, or destroy them, depending on how vigorous they are about it.
I post a psuedo dickish response and Roo posted serious advice. It's freakn' me out. Is hell freezing over? Maybe it's because Harper's majority opens it parliment today...
Roory always gives sage advice. I don't know why you guys are shocked at his sensible and helpful posts.
Well, for the daily "I've been backcombing every week for two years, when do you think I'll start seeing progress? Also, how do you crochet?" posts, there's no nice neglect locks at stake, but in this case I'm trying to save a set of locks. I propose that OP pays this salon loving individual no mind and posts pictures instead.
I understand locking... just thought a professional touch up was an option. I'll be taking everyone's advice here, though. Enough people mentioned possible damage, and fuck no am I going to risk that. I will do that. Gotta find the right camera equipment somewhere around the house first. Give me a couple days. :cheers2:
How do you not know where your camera is? Implying your house is either a mess or you don't want to post pictures. Camera phone will work fine. We're not arsed about photo quality.
if you plan on keeping your locks for a long time, you will be able to tell when you actually began twisting. it will be like a timeline in your hair. why are you letting what others say get to you? do you want more uniform locks? also, too much twisting will weaken the locks, they may break off eventually if they are twisted too thin.
the tips will probably never lock up like you might think. they'll just be spiralled at the ends. maybe and inch or so.
All right. Pics. I took a few. As of August, these will be 2 years long (not 3). Front standing shots: some closer with hair out of face. I now also rock them w/ a headband now that they're long enough. Gonna post a couple more
