The first two that sprang to mind are both from "John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band", those being "God" and "My Mummy's Dead". It's not nice to hearing Lennon sing these. I'm sure there's plenty sadder, but if there were a top 100 I reckon these'd feature somewhere in that.
well...maybe not everyone. some of us old hippies might not think that's even in the league with: 1. in my life...the beatles (i cried the first time i heard it in 1965 and still cry evey time i hear it) 2. cryin'...... roy orbison (very aptly titled) 3. long long time...linda ronstadt 4. those were the days...marianne hopkins (gets sadder as you get older) and what some might think is a strange choice...... bob dylan's dream lamenting the loss of youth and lifetime friendship. now THAT'S sad.....:+( While riding on a train goin' west, I fell asleep for to take my rest. I dreamed a dream that made me sad, Concerning myself and the first few friends I had. With half-damp eyes I stared to the room Where my friends and I spent many an afternoon, Where we together weathered many a storm, Laughin' and singin' till the early hours of the morn. By the old wooden stove where our hats was hung, Our words were told, our songs were sung, Where we longed for nothin' and were quite satisfied Talkin' and a-jokin' about the world outside. With haunted hearts through the heat and cold, We never thought we could ever get old. We thought we could sit forever in fun But our chances really was a million to one. As easy it was to tell black from white, It was all that easy to tell wrong from right. And our choices were few and the thought never hit That the one road we traveled would ever shatter and split. How many a year has passed and gone, And many a gamble has been lost and won, And many a road taken by many a friend, And each one I've never seen again. I wish, I wish, I wish in vain, That we could sit simply in that room again. Ten thousand dollars at the drop of a hat, I'd give it all gladly if our lives could be like that. deezee
to me, 'Leader of the Band' from Dan Fogelberg and 'Love Without End, Amen' from George Strait (he's country, I know) are very sad to me, because they remind me of my deceased father, and I can't listen to them w/o crying. Last Kiss is pretty sad, though. P_H17 -- nice sig pic
Disintigration by The Cure. Just for the the line: I never said I would stay to the end, I knew that I would leave you, with babies, and everything...
Some of Mary Chapin Carpenter's songs are just so evocative. "Only a dream", not exactly a hit of hers, is the saddest song I've ever heard.
Also love Mary C. Carpenter, but most pleading, emotional song has to be Stay with me by Lorraine Ellison, just emotionally draining!
Too many to list but a few that spring to mind right now Nick Drake - Parasite Beach Boys - Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder) Lazily Spun - Prince Valium Portishead - Roads
"Asleep"--The Smiths "In My Life"--The Beatles "10,000 Miles"--Mary C. Carpenter "Old Friends"--Simon & Garfunkle "You're Missing"--Bruce Springsteen "Philadelphia"--Neil Young These songs always make me cry--especially "In my life" and "Old Friends". -Kate
there are alot of sad songs but the only one that brings tears to my eyes is the reason by hoobastank. its not a sad song but it has a special meaning to me. if i were to listen to it now id prolly break down n cry
the saddest song i've heard today was Jeff Buckley's "Lover, you should've come over" i need some time to think of the saddest song ever...
do any of you own the pink floyd pulse album? there is a song on right before "hey you" and the beggining is all guitar intrumentals, then it breaks out with the lyric i think david gilmour sings "where were you, when i was lost and broken". that song always tugs at the ol' heart for me at least.
