I'm looking to move somewhere that I've never lived before. A friend of mine works at a body piercing and tattoo studio in Sacramento, and he says it's pretty cool, but doesn't sound too excited about it. Anybody live there can give me some opinions? I plan to go out for a week or two to check it out first, but wanted some feedback from other people who live there.

i used to live about half an hour from there. it's damn hot and dry in the summer. i got the vibe that it's not really hippy-friendly, but maybe i didn't find the kind parts.

it is only about a two hour drive to the bay area. the opposite direction it's only a few hours to the snow. rent tends to be high for crappy apartments, but i guess thats everywhere.

    maybe check out www.craigslist.com

yes, i'd say go east from there, back up into my hills, the ones indirectly referenced by the mention of snow. not all the way to the top (the summit is at 7,000ft !). when you get to arround 1k ft elevation, at a place called auburn (still very much in the FOOT-hills), turn off of i-80 onto hwy 49 headed north. another less the 20miles you'll come to the 'twin cities' of grass valley and nevada city, (elevation 2500 ft) and if you want REAL hippie country, beyond them to the north san juan ridge.

sacatomatoes is an astray, as are most state capitols, though it does have a few more of less redeaming amenities. not many though, certainly not for the size of its populations. there are a couple of little colleges, and accross the yolo causeway, even further out into the hot dry valley there is the university of california at davis. the state's big aggie, moo cow, vetinary, that sort of thing university.

but head up into my sureal nervana mountains, or over toward the coast, north of the bay area but south of the far northwest corner. my hills aren't all mellow either. this is where the 1849 gold rush took place, and a lot of the touristy stuff is about that. but that one area i mentioned is kind of a mellowness enclave among it.

i'm not sure you'll find much of a market for tats up there. hemp clothing maybe. and farmer's markets. and odd little store fronts and wonderfuly offbeat restaurants and live music venues.
