If I'm going to do the twist and neglect do I need to use rubber bands are twist and hope they stay in?
You dont need to, but they might help. They make sectioning easier, and give a little extra hold for the first couple of days. Make sure you dont leave them in for more than about 2 days, otherwise they sorta melt into a gross mess and your dreads will swallow them up.
Instead of rubberbands, try tying the sections off with string, yarn or thread. Rubberbands get swallowed up by the hair as the dreadlock matures. Whats left after that has to be cut out. I know from experience.... it sucks. If you use "rubbers" make sure you get them all out within a week or two and be 100% sure you dont miss any.
im doing twist and neglect also you should not need the bands.. at first the hair wont stay or set right and it will seem like it just keeps coming undone but gradually it stays together more and more
tender* when i saw the thread title, i thought someone was gonna ask about using condoms to help form dreads
what the crud is twist and neglect? neglect is one thing and then there is twist and rip, twist and neglect sounds like some kind of dance hhaa, I have funny images in my head
There not neccessary. I just dreaded my ladies hair last week using twist and rip and they stayed together perfectely so far without elastics
Ok, in my experience I use rubberband to organize my dreads. I'm a newie here and I have to say if you are going to use them you have to remove them weekly. I can't say mine have melted with my hair. When I wash my hair, I remove them and install new ones. My hair is so thin and straight, So for now I decided to continue with rubber until they get better. I just got 3 weeks with them so I'll use them till got 2 months. And I have to say when I palm rolling my hair they tend to loose (the rubber) I think thats the reason they not Melt. When this happens I tight them like braces lol. Yuo can use rubbers if you want to have a more neat appearance
what i do for twist and neglect since i have super curley hair is i kind of just twist the hair between my fingers and because of its texture it stays put fairly well... aside from that i dont think theres much more too it(aside from the normal washing with residue free shampoo ect ect..). i think more than likely it only works wellwith really curley coarse type hair, i dont know for sure of course. the i found out is through a few of my black friends that have dreads, as that seems to be a popular method.
they just plain dont help in any way. at most they might make them look a tad better for a few days and thats it.
They help a lot. I read the rubberbands help in the making of and locking process maintaining the hair together. Of course you aren't going to leave them forever. It's someting temporary 'till you have your D's in better shape.
