Well, I started my dreads five days ago. They are about 2.5 to 3 inches long. I got them done at a hair stylist, but she did a really shitty job so I ended up re-backcombing them all myself.

I put rubber bands at the roots of all of them to help them lock up, but I'm wondering if I should put them at the tip as well.

rubber bands at the base will cause the hairs to break and weaken your dreads. Take them out, and read the forums to learn.

theres no point in bands man, bands hold the hair tight and wont let it move. the hair needs to be able to move so it can twist, knot and lock.

The rubber bands might break off and get tangled up in your locks, living in there forever. :(

If you do use rubberbands, don't use the office bands. Those are so cheap and break/melt easily. Use poly bands (and not cheap ones from the dollar store, splurge on a good brand) since they are strong and meant to be kept in the hair for a long time.

^ my friend joined the military and used these for her cornrolls and was able to use them for 3 weeks in a row. Crazy shit. Although when it comes to dreads you shouldn't keep them in for more than a week.

yep. no on bands. I put little braids at the roots before I back combed and when they started to grow out I looked as though I little carrots growing out of my head. I can't imagine what they would look like if I had used bands of any kind. If anything use beads, since they at least move about and allow the hair to knot.
