Hes not nearly the greatest guitar player off all time. As for as Delta blues goes ya, he was top notch and innovative and should be studied and respected.

Well I don't know about saying he's no where near being the best, he created alot of the techniques and chords that we all use today. And remember he was entirely self taught. Rolling Stone said he was the 5th best of all time but I honestly think he should come just after Hendrix

Robert J is not only the most covered artist of his time, but prolly in the history of blues and rock.If u look down his back catalogue then you will see that over 25 of his songs have been covered by bands such as zep,stones,aerosmith,clapton-the list really does go on.
Also if u listen to someone like clapton talking about how when RJ played it was like 2 guitarists at once,he held down a rythmn with his thumb and played some crazy chords over the top, like hendrix. Some of these
chords needed tuning adjustments and a great deal of skill to execute.
Then there is his timings, the man is a god damn legend, and anyone that understands that has got my respect, great thread brother!:cheers2:

    I love Robert Johnson.

there's hardly any guitarists who make the illusion of 3 guitars...Robert did that...I reckon he used his thumb a lot.

wow,sos for the delay,me bloody pc packed up for over a month, typical, just as someone did a thread on RJ.
I agree with all but one in this thread, although i respect Beckners right to disagree. From what i can gather he used his thumb to create an almost hypnotic bass rythmn whilst playing over the top, only Jimi could do that as well, and it's worth remembering that to play licks like that is a talent in itself, but to come up with it from scratch is truly the next level,it's also remarkable that in the time between leaveing clarksdale and coming back[about a year]he transformed from a pain in the arse, always shadowing peeps like Son,to a virtuoso with cash, style and plenty of game.....sure he had a dark heart, but damn,he played the blues like a demon.
