A friend of mine wants to go to Italy this summer, but low-budget so they wondered if and where it was possible to do some roadside camping? Or would they have to go pay for campings every night? They drive a VW bus converted for sleeping only inside so it's not so noticable if they'd just sit in a parking lot somewhere but they will probably go with other friends who do have a motor home. Is it allowed anywhere? Any places to absolutely avoid even trying? If it isn't allowed, what's the fine or are you just sent off?

I am not sure about Italy, but in Germany they have rest stops every couple of kilometers, just for sleeping, stretching etc. If the police say anything, just move on.
