Elvin Jones, a great jazz drummer, passed on Tuesday at 76. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=529&ncid=529&e=5&u=/ap/20040519/ap_en_mu/obit_jones
Indeed. A sad day. The quartet, the quintet...Miles Davis to boot. Hung with John Coltrane man...no more words are needed...his drumming inspired these folks: <ramble>It's just a quick blurb from NPR, but a good back</ramble> http://www.npr.org/features/feature.php?wfId=1901925 WKCR out of Columbia.edu is streaming his music for the next couple of days non-stop.... http://www.columbia.edu/cu/wkcr/netcastload.html go for the realplayer stream...much smoother
Oh man, that's a shame. I know he had been suffering for a while, though. I was talking to one of my second cousins at a funeral a few weeks ago, and we were talking about him. He was actually friends with Elvin and jammed with him a couple times. Elvin definitely ranks up there as one of my favorite drummers. I can name a dozen tracks off the top of my head featuring some awe-inspiring drumming by him. What stands out most in my head is probably Coltrane's A Love Supreme, probably mostly because of its extreme historical relevance to music.
