How can you take a fart? Trap it in a jar?

The only think I can think of is a rumor; I'm just not sure if that fits the first tenet.

They make it, but don't tell the person it's about
The person it's about takes the reputation, but doesn't know it at first, or from whence it started
And whoever knows it's a rumor; thinks it's junk.

Seems like I'm stretching it; but it's the only thing I could come up with to fulfill the middle tenet.
